We shot one bowfishing once. Buddy reeled it in and I had no idea what it was, he called it a grinnel.

Wish my fishing hole wasn't on private property which I don't have access too (a friend of mine's deer lease). You can catch them on almost every cast for as long as you feel like messing with them.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy shoot....what a ride!"

My wife caught it in striker creek on a chartreuse crappie jig. I've fished that creek for over 30 years and never seen one. Thanks to everyone for the help identifying. When I googled it, there are several different ones. This one didn't have the big teeth like the small ones I've caught in perch traps.

Yep its a bowfin/grinnel.. DO NOT put your finger in its mouth. Even a small one will clamp down and not turn loose.

Another rare catch for texas is chain pickerel. There was a ditch near our house where we used to catch them as kids, but I've never caught one anywhere else and haven't caught one in close to 30 years.

                Here is their "range":

Down in the swamps they call them Shoepick. As kids, we use to catch a mess of them in the ditches. Take a old crab trap, put a old fish head in it, you would catch a mess of them in no time. People would eat them, so we would give them away. My grandma would not let those things in the house.

Cypress Bass, Cotton Fish...a couple more names.

I was with a friend that caught one out of the Sabine that weighed 11 lbs

I just remembered a show where they were talking about a snake fish or something like that that were an invasive species and dangerous to lakes. Figured that might be what it was.
                          You're thinking of a snakehead.

I've caught them at Lake O' The Pines and Caddo.

Yup, Chain pickerel. I use to catch them all over the ponds in the Woodlands.

I've caught them in the creeks that run through the old Camp Strake Boy Scout camp.
