The fish I have always called grinnel have many teeth and look like alligator gar. May have to start another thread when I catch another one of those. Thanks for the clarification.

If he didn't know what it was, I dang sure didn't but I don't get around east tx lakes much.

I just remembered a show where they were talking about a snake fish or something like that that were an invasive species and dangerous to lakes. Figured that might be what it was.

It's a bowfin, that I call a grinnel, that my old Acadian boss called a choupique.

neches river is full of them, steinhagen lake ( damB) pine island bayou, all of the creeks and ponds in the big thicket preserve units have them,, especially in the jack gore baygall unit,, village creek, 10 mile and lake bayou off the neches just a little north of IH10,,, most of the 100's I have caught have been very shallow, 3 feet or less..... dang near any old body of water in east texas has them,, never fished farther west than the trinity but I expect they are plentiful nearly anywhere at least in the eastern half of the state..

They are everywhere in Texas. But if you plan on going somewhere with the intent on targeting just them.....your in for a looooooong wait. They are almost always accidentally caught while targeting something else.
