You need to work on this and educate yourself. Take your current salary, adjust it for inflation into the future, and then multiply that by the number of years you want to stay alive after you retire. That's just a ballpark number. How you get to it will depend on savings, investments, inflation, and which regime is in power dictating tax rates when you finally eject from the workforce. You'll also need to bump it up to cover increasing medical bills as you age, a crippling health insurance premium, and whatever toys/land/travel/hunts you might want.

Retired a year ago at 61. It's a big move, but at some point you just got to go for it.

Congratulations to you all that can retire early. Unfortunately, No way I could retire in my 50s ... that's right when my 4 kids will be in college.

My plan at 18 was to find a good long term job with great benefits, it also included me retiring at 52 with house and land paid for. I wanted to be old enough to know better but still young enough to do it. Well I hit a few snags along the way, but I still accomplished my dream and retired on my 54th Birthday. Now I spend my days trying to keep up with the place, lots of grass to mow (18 acres ) fence lines to keep clean, trees to trim, watching the chickens peck and scratch. I am loving it!! The only draw back is that most of my friends are still working so it is really hard to take off on a whim to go fishing on the coast, or Crappie fishing at the lake. ( the wife frowns on me taking the boat out by myself )
I think where a lot of people fail at the retirement game ( besides living above their means ) is they think retirement is you sit and do nothing all day. You need to have hobbies, find something to piddle with, get you a few chickens, nothing to keep you working 8-12 hours a day, but enough to keep you from getting bored. I keep my Chickens and dogs spoiled, all of my lawn equipment is tuned up and running like a top, my chainsaws have razor sharp chains, my boat is spotless, my point is, there is always something to do or learn and now you have time to do it and learn it. Get out and enjoy it!

I retire from the Army at 43 this summer. I have to do something so I'll get a job full time doing something just to take up time and give me some extra cash. I'm not sure where my career is headed after the military just know I don't want to sit around the house saying "well what do I want to do today" as I like to keep busy. I'll take life a day at a time and just be thankful for what I have as I'm sure things will put me on what ever path I should be on in this second chapter of my life.

I retired after 30 years in the fire service at 53 but I'm not drawing my retirement yet it's so much better if I wait until I'm 60 to start drawing it. So I took a year off and then got another job

Interesting. Insurance is going to be a killer for me as well if and when I retire.

I'm coming up on 58 and I'm looking at my situation. What I do isn't physical, so I'll probably work until 66 years 10 months, at least. I will probably work part time after that.

As I tell my co-workers, I started working to retire, on the day I was hired. September 1989. Savings meant more to me, than immediate gratification.
                                Yep!

$14k a year for the wife and I on private insurance and it doesn't cover squat.......Ridiculous!
