Now after 15 years we were at a local event with a lot of people and he gets up and says he has to go because his ptsd is bothering him. it was almost like he caught it like the flu or something and now all the sudden he has "war stories". If we are somewhere with a few people having a cold one he then talks about how he gets his check everymonth now since he has ptsd and whatever else

but thanks to all who have served in any way
I have the issue of needing to leave crowded places.. I don't announce it as a PTSD problem, but those who know me know I just need some fresh air before I start throwing elbows. Lol.

There's guys that actually have issues when they get back, then there's the fobbits that got a CAB bc a rocket flew over KAF and missed by 3 miles and got free promotion points..

PTSD, to me, is a blanket "diagnosis" that gives the docs an easy out. "Here's your meds and disability rating, see you next time" kinda stuff and it makes my blood boil.. I tried for over a year to get rated for my shoulder, back, and hip but I got the run around.. Told it was a misdiagnosis, wasn't documented, can't prove it was service connected, etc. Which is all just one big giant bottle of poo. Eventually, I just gave up on fighting the VA bc I couldn't afford to keep taking time off work.

I just let the ones that are obvious liars and attention seekers say what they've been rehearsing for however many years.. I try to not give them the satisfaction of getting me fired up. I did kinda lose my cool when one asked me why I hadn't thanked him for his service tho..

Sadly, there seems to be a need for those folks to feel heroic, or feel important, probably because they feel that they haven't done something in their life worthy of recognition, or want respect, or special treatment. I'm sure that there is a psychological reason as to why.

All the military members in my family never talked about their service, and for our family members who are currently serving, they don't discuss their assignments, yet we all know that they have done some bad-@ss things. I just wish my grandpa had told me more, instead of me having to find out via old newspaper clippings after he had passed away.

I've been asked more times than I can count if I served, last time was Wednesday and the time before that was 2 weeks ago. I would never dream of dis-respecting our men and women of the armed forces and take credit for the sacrifices so many have made just so I could get some attention.

I have a first cousin that served three tours in Vietnam in Special Forces and a best friend that served two tours in Vietnam in the Marines. Neither EVER talks about their service and wouldn't get caught dead bragging about their service.

                    I'm a vet. NOT a Combat Vet.

I LOATH Memorial day and Veterans Day at Church.
                    Here's why.
                    1) Memorial Day is to Honor and Remember the Fallen. I ain't dead!
                    2) Veterans Day to me is for those that have SEEN Combat. I've never seen Combat, got no Service related disabilities. Well if Honor, Pride and Diligence are Service related than I'm one jillion percent disabled...

Our Preacher asks us to stand up to be recognized on both days. The congregation stands and applauds us for our Service.
I try not to stand up.
Our Preacher knows I'm a Vet and has called me by name to stand.
Its almost unbearably humiliating for me.
Since I sing bass in the Choir I'm at the front of the church and being 6'7" tall its hard to crawl into the Hymnal to hide.

I understand that they are showing their gratitude and appreciation to and for me, my Brothers and Sisters in Arms. Some wish they could do more but don't know what to do.
I really get that. I'm no one special!

Now Jesus on the other hand! Why don't they, scum suckers, want to be like Him! He was a Warrior. He conquered death!

I endeavor to be like Him but I fail miserably.

I wish we could hold Public Beat downs for the scum suckers that claim to have served but didn't!
Flunking out of Boot Camp doesn't count towards service!
PB2, I could have written this very post for many years... Yea, I am a vet too, even a commission, but it was PEACE TIME... I felt ashamed to stand with the REAL men and women who put their lives on the line every day for years... Then one day in Bible Study, before we went down to worship service, a classsmate of mine after I told him basically the same thing... I didn't want to stand, that I did not feel worthy to stand with the "real" veterans, he told me, "Charlie, would you have gone if you'd been called?" I told him, "Of course I would have, that's what I'd been trained for and trained to lead men on a ship in combat or whatever was needed." He told me, "Sir your are a VETERAN of these UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and you should be proud of that all by itself. There are literally millions of men and women all over this world that would give anything to be able to say they were part of the USA armed forces, combat or not... It gave me a whole new view of things, and I have been reassured through prayer and study that he in fact was right. I am proud to stand with these men and women when the time comes. I also thank God each and every time that I did not have to make the choice to kill someone or shoot a projectile, missle or other ordinance that was capable of killing thousands I'd never see... Be proud of your service is what I'd suggest.
And Sir, I thank you for your service and willingness to write that check for your life for this country. She's still worth fighting for, you know...

not many people ask me if I've served anymore...must be the beard....I'm ok with staying under the radar. I feel bad for those that spout off about what they did (or if they really did), I hope they get what they need. I'd rather be quiet about it all, to me it was just a job i did for a while, my reasons were my own. I'm nothing special, there are a ton better people out there, I'm just a guy.

Sometimes a guy needs to be left alone, and sometimes a real ice cold Lone Star tastes real good.

Sorry to hear abut your range man. Unfortunately I have been around a few of those myself, and the only thing I think they may have fought was which "substance" to start off with today.
I never served, nor have I ever pretended to. I'm a basic young American chasing the life that people like you really have given to us. I do have a step-brother that served, saw combat, and is now home trying to make the most of life. He never speaks of his time out, and doesn't bang a gong for everyone to know. I suspect you have the same mentality.
There are many posers in life, but all will face the truth in the end.

                              Why is it......

Your story brought back painful memories of my experiences with hand-to-hand combat while in Iraqistan, fighting off the viet cong along the 38th parallel, the week after pearl harbor. It was some heavy ****, man.

And these stolen valor a-holes need to have a little honesty beaten back into them.
