    Why is it......

I worked with a guy that lied about going to Iraq. The funniest part about the whole thing was he was telling us the story about how he was in iraq with a very close friend of mine and how they did all these bad a** missions together. I knew he was lying from the very first sentence but couldn't bring myself to call him out at the time infront of everyone that was there. And the only place he went to was Kuwait and sat on the base the entire time.

I had a tub tell me once that I did not need a 300 Win Mag. He said a 308 would kill anything on the continent said he could hit a man in the head at 1250 meters with a 308. Said he was a marine sniper. He was probably pushing 375. I watched him shoot his pistol with his shoulders back andhis hips cocked forward. No way in Hell he had any kind of training shooting.
Some people have low self-esteem and need to lie to make themselves feel better. He did not impress me so if he was trying to do that, Fail.

You know we read stories on huntin forums about bang flops, dead right theres' or 150 yard archery shots in a head wind with a Bear DELTA-V with no sights and we can roll our eyes and go on.
Sometimes there are things people say that we know is a lie and we blow it off, but every once in a while a lie can hit a nerve and something needs to be said.

Wow most vets I have met are humbled and really low key. Not a lot of flash bang with them. Just good guys. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I've run across a few myself. I don't call them out, I have called them a liar and turned and walked away!

                I'm a vet. NOT a Combat Vet.

I LOATH Memorial day and Veterans Day at Church.
                Here's why.
                1) Memorial Day is to Honor and Remember the Fallen. I ain't dead!
                2) Veterans Day to me is for those that have SEEN Combat. I've never seen Combat, got no Service related disabilities. Well if Honor, Pride and Diligence are Service related than I'm one jillion percent disabled...

Our Preacher asks us to stand up to be recognized on both days. The congregation stands and applauds us for our Service.
I try not to stand up.
Our Preacher knows I'm a Vet and has called me by name to stand.
Its almost unbearably humiliating for me.
Since I sing bass in the Choir I'm at the front of the church and being 6'7" tall its hard to crawl into the Hymnal to hide.

I understand that they are showing their gratitude and appreciation to and for me, my Brothers and Sisters in Arms. Some wish they could do more but don't know what to do.
I really get that. I'm no one special!

Now Jesus on the other hand! Why don't they, scum suckers, want to be like Him! He was a Warrior. He conquered death!

I endeavor to be like Him but I fail miserably.

I wish we could hold Public Beat downs for the scum suckers that claim to have served but didn't!
Flunking out of Boot Camp doesn't count towards service!

What he meant to say is I didn't make it through boot camp and now I have a sad life.

Same boat and feel the same. I don't like it, but I think some people like to thank others as much as some want the recognition. I tell every veteran I see at the hospital (usually by their hat) I work at Thank You for your service. I would rather for veterans to be told thank you 1000 times without needing it than any to go through what many of the Vietnam veterans got.

like others have said guys that have truly served and been in some deep crap before rarely speak of the occurences..I have a "buddy" that was in the forces and while he was in he said all he ever did was be a security guard at some non combat place just sitting with a gun in his lap for a shift then theyd go drink at the bar. Now after 15 years we were at a local event with a lot of people and he gets up and says he has to go because his ptsd is bothering him. it was almost like he caught it like the flu or something and now all the sudden he has "war stories". If we are somewhere with a few people having a cold one he then talks about how he gets his check everymonth now since he has ptsd and whatever else

but thanks to all who have served in any way

Both of my grandfathers were in the Army and were deployed during WWII. One of them boxed for the Army basically as a prize fighter and had a great time and would talk about his time overseas and share photo albums. Spoke of it as a fairly decent time and spoke of it often.

My other grandfather only ever told me one thing. That he and another buddy had not slept for 72 hours one time and crawled under a jeep much like the one we were riding out to deer hunt in that morning (old Willys) and slept.

My dad also never heard him speak much of the service in his 44 years with him on earth.

His medals and his siblings told the story after he passed. He was the real deal. I'm just glad I got to hunt with him before he passed away. He made one mean deer camp roast!

Op, thank you for your service. Sadly, there seems to be a need for those folks to feel heroic, or feel important, probably because they feel that they haven't done something in their life worthy of recognition, or want respect, or special treatment. I'm sure that there is a psychological reason as to why.

All the military members in my family never talked about their service, and for our family members who are currently serving, they don't discuss their assignments, yet we all know that they have done some bad-@ss things. I just wish my grandpa had told me more, instead of me having to find out via old newspaper clippings after he had passed away.

When I retired as a Corporal Major General third class from the Army Seals I told myself I'd whoop the butts of those that would lie about their service.
