I'd recommend using a separate modem and router and getting rid of the Cable company provided equipment. You'll spend a little over $200.00 but it will pay for itself in no time, considering what they charge each month to "lease" you their stuff. I've also found the separate modem/router to perform better than the consolidated devices.
I've redone 4 of my buddies home wifi with the equipment below, while at the same time updating all of the Ethernet and co-ax cables (the latest style connectors provide a lot less interference which in turn, improves performance). There homes are all multi-story and over 4000sq ft. We've seen download speed increase well over 100% for each of 'em. For example, on Time Warner's 100mb MAXX package, my average speeds went from about 15MB per sec to over 60MB per sec. Everyone is very happy with there range/speed now.
