It's a devastating round for hogs.

It is the deadliest, at least in our opinion.

We have shot thousands of hogs out of helicopters and this is what we use.

We have used everything and this combo is incredible, at least for us.
I agree, the stopping power of this load is off the charts.

That's not necessarily the case Steve.

I always aim for the base of the ear. And with the extra-full choke setup, it holds a super tight pattern.

The last few big hogs I shot at 30+- yards had the wad lying right beside them, telling me the pellets were all together when they hit the hog, with the wadding actually hitting the hog in the head as well.

That’s almost 2 ounces of lead basically put in one spot. None of the hogs I have shot with this combo have even taken a step after being shot.

In any case, shooting hogs with a scattergun is a blast; no matter what load you send their way.

      Got 5 with 1 shot with a 20-ga 3" mag #3 buck at about 14 yds once.
X2 I love me some #4 buck and a mod choke.

I understand what you are saying. We werent exactly on the same page. I was talking about pot shooting the sounder and killing as many as I could. That load would probably drop an elephant at close range.

I figured that's what you probably meant Steve.

I've never pot shot them before, but I imagine a good old fashioned smooth bore behind a big pellet size would throw a really wide pattern at a fairly close range.

It sure would be fun to get a skillet shot like dustoffer's 5-Bagger.

I will x 3 this. It's about biggest shot you can use with a extra tight choke. All guns are filled with it. 2 legs 4 legs no legs in house or out. This is about as deadly as it comes with a shot gun with out the issues with buck or slugs. I heard it was used as a law enforcement load as will at one time. Not sure how true it was but did read about it in at least one magazine a while back. Everyone thing with 4 legs that was on the other end never twitched. It's small enough I feel ok shooting it up in a tree in farely inhabited country area. Can't say the same with buck. Also heard 1 buck is a good compromise between size and pellet count.

I love using the shotty on hogs, I used 00 or just buckshot. I would hunt from a bow stand or a pop up in the range of 20 to 40 yards most of the time. And if I was feeling super lazy I would park the truck about 40 yards down wind of the feeder, have the window down, lay the seat back and just listen for them to show up.

Having used both, I prefer the defender's over just buckshot.
They are a little more nasty.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Tons of good info on buckshot and it's getting that time to start thinning the hogs and coyotes some. Love me some winter time Hog and predator hunting. My load of choice will be the Federal 3" 00 buck with the flight control wad. They are getting 8 inch patterns at 30yrds with an Improved cylinder. Also going to shoot the Reminton 1 oz Foster slugs. Remington 870 should do the trick with a BSA 1.5-5x shotgun scope. Also have a new Foxpro caller ordered from Cabelas. It should be here on Tuesday.

00 because #4 are too light and will not penetrate as well.

I thought that as well but a friend of mine uses a full chock and shoots them in the head out to 35 yrds. Really does a number on them. But yes on bigger pigs in the body 00 or 000 would be better. Thinking of trying the Remington nitro lead #2s to pot shoot small ones.
