    This!

Back washing does get rid of a lot of the DE, but there is always some left inside. Twice a year I disassemble my DE filter completely and clean off all the filter elements with a hose. Takes me about an hour. . I then add DE and run the pool 24 hours. This will clear up your water very well. Monitor your chemicals and your good to go.

I use pool calculator.com with the water testing results to do the next step. Much cheaper than all the chemicals the pool store pushes on you . I do buy their chlorine but that's about it.

You can't clean a sand filter only backwash. I usually backwash for 45 sec. to a minute. Then rinse for 30 seconds. Do you know the last time the sand was changed in the filter?

Note: I own a pool service company

                  This may help....

This post will walk you through the anatomy of a sand filter, and then provide a video at the end for how to deep clean your sand filter. The filter used in the photos and videos is a Hayward S180T top mount sand filter. The images are of a similar filter. Obviously not all filters are...

Backwash until the sight glass is clear then rinse until the same if you have a five way valve.

If that doesn't help, fill a Gatorade bottle with water and take it to a pool supply store for a free chemical analysis.

My wife said that the lady we bought the house from just changed the sand out before she moved out.

I will try to backwash it tomorrow and then rinse it to seeif that makes it better. Along with taking a water sample in on Monday. Thanks for the help.

Just be cautious of the big name pool stores. They will try to sell you everything in the store if they can, but are a good way to have your water tested to get chem levels if you don't have a test kit. Main levels you should be concerned with are chlorine, PH, and cyanuric acid.

I went out this afternoon and backwashed and rinsed my filter. I looked at my chlorinator and noticed that the filler hose that was connected to it was broken off at the valve and the hose was just stuck into going to it. The previous owner had the valve cut off so it wouldn't leak. I will get a new valve tomorrow.

everyone has different opinions when it comes to pool maintenance

I run my pool (filter) from 10a to 2 PM , 12 hrs seems like a long time

summer time will definitely burn up chlorine as get a floater thingy and put 2-3 tabs to maintain chlorine levels

OK. So I shocked the pool and it's back to looking good. Now there is debris on the bottom from the oak trees pollen domaflatchies that is too small for my vacuum, Polaris, or net. What's the best way to get that stuff out?
