I had a sow charge me about 15 years ago. She had a litter of piglets and Inwas stalking her in really short grass. She busted me and after a stare down for a few seconds she came after me. I was already up to my knees and managed to shoot her at about 5 yards and she ran right beside me after the shot. Never found her.
I don't think she would have charged if I was standing on my feet. Who knows for sure, I think she thought I Was a lot smaller with me being on my belly and then on my knees.

Had a cousin that got bit by a sow on the hand. He almost bleed out before he got to the ambulance. Lost feeling in three fingers and has a nasty scare from it. Cant remember if he was running dogs or trying to get her out of a trap. Been treed from a mommy sow with piglets when I was real young. she hung around for a little while before she finally left.

Been growled at a few times when getting out of the stand right at dark when a few decided to come in. Never outright charged though. Seemed they were just about as uneasy about the situation as I was and just trotted off in the opposite direction after a brief pause.
As stated many times already, I think the majority of attacks are provoked in some way or another whether it be running dogs, trailing a wounded one, etc.
I'd also venture to say a few people that think they were charged probably were standing in the middle of the clear exit of an area.

Found ? Your dog?

Ive been false charged more times than I can count. Provoked and un provoked.
Ive only had one legit scare-me-to-death charge. 120ish lb sow charged me from 60-70 yards away on a right of way. I was carrying a Winchester 94 Trapper in 30-30. I had 6 rounds in it. No pistol. No extra rounds.
I started shooting at about 20 yards and she fell at about 8 feet with 6 entry holes in her.
When she hit the ground I went to put one more in her and heard a click. Ive never been in the woods without some type of backup since.

Stand your ground. Gives a whole new meaning when there is nothing to climb but a Christmas tree cactus. Had one charge me in the dark just after a hunt in Oct 2005. I was on my knees changing an SD card from a trail cam near a feeder. He did stop 5 feet from me and just growled after that when I stood up. Then he turned and walked off. It all hit me after it was over
. Very lucky that night.

I have done that once. You reminded me of it. I had a big boar in a hog trap that broke the weld loose. The boar got out and headed right at me. I was lucky to be next to a tree cuz he had no intention of false charging.Last edited by AntlerCollector; 03-17-2016, 08:07 PM.

It's amazing how well you can climb with the proper motivation.

Dang I'm late to the party. Busy week due to spring break I think we're pushing 50-60 hogs down for the week.
I've been charged more times than I can count. Been hit several dozen times. Had one charge and hit me in the heel and break my heel bone once.
I've actually been in worse wrecks than the one that landed me in the hospital. That one just didn't work out in my favor.
If any of you know Dr Peter Chang the plastic surgeon in Sugar Land a few weekends ago we took a silent and blind charge from behind that was spooky.
99x out of a 100 a hog doesn't want anything to do with you. They are going to bluff charge you and peel away. The one that does commit to you wants to whip your ***.
Hurt, injured, cornered, a sow with some peewees. Those are quick to get in your hip pocket.
Most folks think they can outrun them. You can't. Even an injured hog can outrun a fast man. You might do it once but the odds aren't in your favor.
Find a tree and make the hog commit to one side and switch to the other just before he gets to you. That's the best way to avoid a charge. What's funny is when my hunter is hiding behind me and I move out of the hogs way and the hunter freezes and gets plowed over. Oh man it's a good laugh when and a high you can't buy anywhere.
I'll share a few of the old pics I have on my phone. Hopefully I never have any new ones.
Still amazes me where I was gashed open. I wore Chippewas for years figuring I'd get cut on the legs. Never imagined I'd take the brunt of the fight with my arms.
