Dang. That stinks. I handle/carry a weapon on my body about 60 or more hrs a week. I can understand how folks get so used to handling a weapon that they have a very high degree of confidence while handling. That same confidence and comfortablilty can cause complacency. You just have to always remain vigilant with reference to weapons safety. I've never had an ND. I nearly did one time and then realized what I was about to do. I beat myself up pretty good over the complacency and have never made that mistake again. He got very lucky this time. This will no doubt deflate his confidence in weapons handling. He'll have to earn that back for himself. The scars will be a daily reminder. I'm glad that this wasn't worse. I've been on the scene of several ND's. They will make your "exit hole" slam shut every time.
Sounds like that is exactly what he did. Always remove the magazine first then pull slide back to empty chamber.
Pullersboy brings up a good point too. Many times we develop high confidence and then become complacent, and don't pay attention to what we are doing. Everyone of us can fall into it.
Recently in East Texas a guy was showing off his new Kimber to his buddy. He was trying to clear it and in the process, shot and killed his buddy. Two lives destroyed that day. Very sad and he is charged with homicide.
We were around 20 yo and a buddy though it would be a good idea to "quick draw" with the pistol already cocked. 22 lr thru his thigh.
Another story....was in the deer blind with a buddy and while attempting to point .270 out of blind, he pulled the trigger...while gun still inside blind. Luckily no one shot. Ears still ringing 20 years later.
Finally, my Dad was in his bedroom "test loading" hand loads into a 30 Harrett pistol. Lays pistol down and takes a leak. Then he decided to practice "squeeze" the trigger. Hadn't unloaded it. I ran into bedroom and he was ghost white. Shot into the wall.
I have a friend of mine with a 45 in his calf. Tried to clear a 45 auto in the truck. It was cold and wet out, he pointed at the floor board and racked the pistol to clear it and his hand slipped. Boom! They left the slug in his calf.
Pretty loud in a truck.
