Anytime I go hunt somewhere like this, I always ask them what I am going after. Does? Cull bucks? Most of the time I already know the answer and they typically say that if a buck of a lifetime walks out, by God shoot it!

You made the right call since you did not discuss the possibility of shooting a monster deer.

Not sure I would ever be comfortable taking a big deer as a guest unless the person that invited me was sitting with me and telling me to shoot.

On a lease I imagine it can cause hard feelings with other members if a guest shoots a big buck, leading to tension between the members

In my opinion you did right. His lease, his money, his hard work, his trophies! I would rather shoot cull bucks and does EVERY year instead of one trophy ONE year. The only way I would have taken that deer is with him in that stand with me telling me if I dont shoot I'm never coming back!
