You never know who's going to get upset over a deer. Many a friendship has been destroyed over deer (sadly.) So better to err on the side of caution if your friend's expectations aren't clear.

Id be ecstatic if a buddy got a hold of a brute like that on my watch and invite.
When I'm invited somewhere, I make it clear on what they do or do not what shot.

Many hosts might never voice their disappointment, but they would still be disappointed. Don't kill a giant unless you're like brothers with every single lease member, could reflect poorly on your friend.
Only you can assess your bond with them, and their heart. Sounds like you made the right call

I hunt a friend's place on occasion every year. Even though he tells me to shoot whatever I want while I realize that he is trying to keep some breeder bucks, I always shoot a doe instead. Its a small price to pay for being trusted on someone else's land and puts meat in the freezer as well!
