Just some advise, in texas, this is illegal and can be considered child endangerment. Not saying it's wrong because there is no way in hell my 3 yo could rack the slide on my beretta, just what the law states. I got dog piled on another site for suggesting the same thing and looked up the law myself. I have since changed the way I secure my HD weapon.

Securing your apartment and making it thief/burglar resistant is just as important as having a gun. The dowel rod in the door track is good. Do anything you can to upgrade door/window locks. Buy a cheap motion detector alarm as well to wake you up.

Sorry you had to go through this, but glad no one was hurt.

Get a dog? As soon as that dog barks, game on. My doorbell went off a couple nights ago at about 12:30. My dogs went crazy. I grabbed my Glock and headed that way. I asked who it was before I got to the door and looked in the peep hole incase something happened. It was my drunk neighbor "Oh were you sleeping?"

I have a Barska biometric safe mounted to my nightstand by the bed. G19 loaded ready to go inside. I'm pretty sure with enough motivation, a thief could get into it fairly easily, but it keeps curious little fingers out just fine.

Definitely, a good broom stick can keep that door closed.

Empty gun = a rock. The best you can do is throw it at them.

The electronic safes with fingerprint recognition are probably the best quick access that still keep them from children. Keep it on your nightstand or somewhere close to the best and readily accessible.

Get a Lab. They go crazy at noises, but would actually just lick people to death....

I keep loaded guns locked up. Not quiet as firm about it now days as my kids are almost grown. They grew up around guns and understand how deadly they are.

All my guns are loaded. All guns in my house growing up were loaded and at ready. There was at least 4 guns in every corner of every closet in our house. My dad a was a collector, well really a hoarder of guns. I was taught to leave them alone until it was time to go hunting. I learned to respect that and we had zero problems.

Of course racking a round in the chamber of a shotgun is enough to send most people running....

I had my boys go through hunter safety starting around 9 yrs old. gun safety in the house was very big topic and we talked about it several times. We always had a dog and I made sure that all the teenagers and older crowd knew I kept a loaded shotgun in the house. It also helped that I worked out of the house too......

I was raised in a house with loaded guns and my children have been also. My oldest in now 28 and my youngest 14. They all hunt and we have never had an issue. There is a loaded pistol at the house right now and one in my vehicle. Proper raising is what matters.
