Long story short were staying in a apartment till we can move back in our house oct 19 but last night our apartment was broken into. My 6 year old son was sleeping in the living room and the theif came in from the back sliding glass door. It was locked but with a little knowledge u can bend this metal piece back and that's what he did. He made out with a laptop some cash from my wife's purse and broke some electronic we had. He woke my son up up but think God my son didn't see them he came into our room saying he was scared I thought it was just a bad nightmare. I didn't notice anything till I got home from work. But I know it happens last night because wife money was gone this morning. With that said I've never kept a loaded gun in my house because of my kids but now I'm second thinking that if anybody does it is where do you store it and and safety gadgets to ensure kids from getting it. I'm pretty upset about this and it kinda hit home growing up we never had to worry about something like this. Police were called there is a case open and charges will be pressed if found.

I would probably be the wrong person to ask, but I've never seen where an unloaded gun is of much use. Growing up with five kids in the house, the oldest two were five when the current wife and I married, they all knew the dangers of a weapon. Why? Because I taught them. They all knew not to touch it or show it to anybody. All about trust.
But again, I may be the wrong person.

Man that is a scary thought. Im thankful for your sake that your son was okay and the thief didn't inflict any harm to him. I cant even begin to imagine that happening.
That being said. I have 4-5 loaded guns readily available in my home. A couple in the bedroom and in a couple of other concealed locations in the house. You never know what room you might be in when something bad happens. I also do not have any children in my house and rarely have visitors. Even the visitors that I do have are adult family members and I have no questions about gun safety. If I had children I would most definitely not have a couple of them where I do just for the fact that I wouldn't want them to get ahold of them.
If nothing else keep a shotgun close to the bed with out a shell loaded. Just the sound of racking a round into a shotgun itself can be a scary sound in the middle of the night.

I think most accidents happen in the home involving children & guns is curiosity. If kids are shown guns, get to hold them & get to see what kind of damage they can do I feel they are then a lot less likely to harm themselves. My kid was taught @ about 4 or 5 about all the guns we owned, handled them (unloaded of course) & shown what a pistol & a shotgun will do to a watermelon. Any time she wants to touch or hold a gun just let me know & we'll do it together. I feel if you take all the curiosity out of the equation, AND add some education to it, the common issues are sidelined. Your situation is a very scary ordeal w/the thief coming in while y'all were there & your kiddo in the room. Creepy for sure. Block the sliding door shut & get those cheap little alarms that you can put on all doors & windows that start beeping really loud when one is opened. Stay safe.
