    Google Bulldog Vault

Cabelas has them for under $25

They have a key and rolling code version

You can keep it in the nightstand. Locked while you are at work and unlocked at night.

My kid was taught @ about 4 or 5 about all the guns we owned, handled them (unloaded of course) & shown what a pistol & a shotgun will do to a watermelon. Any time she wants to touch or hold a gun just let me know & we'll do it together. I feel if you take all the curiosity out of the equation, AND add some education to it, the common issues are sidelined. Your situation is a very scary ordeal w/the thief coming in while y'all were there & your kiddo in the room. Creepy for sure. Block the sliding door shut & get those cheap little alarms that you can put on all doors & windows that start beeping really loud when one is opened. Stay safe.

Both of these. And a few others that are very similar.

Real glad y'all are all OK!!

We always had them loaded in the house, usually with the bolt up or with the pump shotgun half closed. Dad made it known that things were ready to get dirty with a quick movement. Knowledge Knowledge Knowledge!!!

Education and removing curiosity are key. Our three year old has handled a couple of my firearms already (unloaded and supervised). She also knows she can ask any time, but to never touch them without me. My goal is for her to think of a gun as a machine, not as something magical or forbidden.

Exactly, I go as far as to even show the neighborhood kids where it is when they come over. It removes the curiosity and surprise element if they do come across it playing with my kids.

I never worry about my 9yo and my 4 and 2 yo are in training every time the opportunity arises. This is the most important thing. It's not hiding it, that's the worst, it's education and respect for what it can do. If you hide it, they will find it.

This story scared the hell out of me just thinking about him waking your little boy up like that.
                yup. ^

do what Cajun Blake suggested w/the dowel rod also.

when I rented I had a couple of driveway alarms near the doors,
anything crossed the beams it woke me up.
THAT is when you need a gun.

All stay loaded. I think 6years old is old enough to know about weapons. Educate them at a young age and take them out and let them shoot, show them what they can do.
I was raised around them my whole life and my mother always had loaded guns laying around. She was a single parent and worked rotating shifts,so I was home alone quite a bit. Always had friends over as a teenager and never played with them because I was taught not to and I knew if I did that butt was going to get tore up.
I think that gun education is the best thing for kids if you are going to have them.

I'm sorry you had to experience that. Scary for sure. When you move back into your home, keep this experience in mind. Look into motion detection lighting and even a vid cam system. They can be had in the $300 range. Even a home alarm system. There always was and is a loaded gun in my house. There are several with my sons having their CCW. My kids grew up around guns and the mystery was removed. Always been a safe home.
A shotgun on rubber coated hooks on the inside top of a closet works well for access and concealment.

You might be surprised at what the kids know that you don't know they know--they can and will get into just about everything eventually. Teach, teach, teach. Get a small watermelon or cantaloupe and shoot it with one of your deer rifles so it explodes--the kids need to know it isn't a "bang, bang, you're dead, no you missed me" situation with real guns.

A German Shepard or something like that might help you sleep better. No one is going to "sneak in" on a protective dog.

Ain't that the truth. My inside dogs go nuts when someone is halfway up the drive - without seeing the vehicle and in the back bedroom.
