I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Volume 2

I'm not much of a farmer.

Just two generations ago, my grandfather was one of the largest cotton farmers in the north Louisiana area. Thirty five years later and I have not a clue.

I figured that I needed some seed and some water.

    Maybe a tractor.

Mistake number one was planting my dove field in August....

After it hasn't rained for 40 days around here, the ground gets a little dusty.

So it hasn't germinated? You may have the hottest dove field in the area, what with all the planted ungerminated seed lying about.

Not sure how you explain to mr Game Warden that 'no you weren't baiting, you are just a TERRIBLE farmer!"

Doesn't sound like it's your fault one bit. Even the best Farmer in existence can't make it rain. Only answer I've got for you is to go get a watering system to make artificial rain.

Pee on it, then it won't be so dusty.

I honestly am not a farmer, either, but I honestly believe there aren't any crops to plant in August.

I remember during the drouth of 2011, a young man asked me what he could plant as a food plot for the upcoming hunting season. It was July. And I was a Mossy Oak pro-staff rep doing a show at Bass Pro. I laughed and said, "Well, first, we need it to rain. A lot. Nothing will grow without water."

Absolutely!!! That and poop are always good for a laugh. Even if it takes 1/4 mile to get there.

I had the best intentions of planting a few months back.....

I got the seed and broke up the ground in two areas on our place. One is pretty big, maybe an acre with some big oaks around it, and the other is just a long strip inside of our 3 acres around the house (but close to the creek)

Then life happened and I just let this project sit....

Brown top millet, sunflowers and a fall mix.

Back on topic... I've planted twice at the end of August both times and it worked out ok. One time was a little wait of around 5 days but it all worked out. Good luck!

My goal is to see if I can get anything to grow, get some sunflowers in the ground that will hopefully come up year after year, and eventually have a couple of nice plots for deer and birds.

That probably won't happen this year, but I'm going to see how it goes....

Both plots are within reach of water. So I'm not completely waiting on the rain.

I doubt that was the number one mistake...

You really planted it at the end of July right? That would give you 30 days.
