    Spinoff of tip thread

Didn't want to derail (yea right) the other thread.

Why is the tip based on the total amount of the ticket?

Let's say we eat dinner at Place A and the total bill comes to $30. That's an appetizer, drinks, and 2 entrees. I tip $6 because that's 20%.

The next night, we eat dinner at Place B and the total bill comes to $100. Appetizer, drinks, 2 entrees. Going by the 20% rule, the tip would be $20.

If the meal layout was exactly the same, and the waitress did no more work than the first, why should the tip be higher?

    This is an honest question.

Place A you sat the table for 30min
Place B you sat at the table for 2hrs.

At nice restaurants the waiter only gets a few tables a night. They waiter at a fancy steakhouse isnt making more money than the one at Outback.

You get what you pay for.

I am pretty sure the $100 meal was better than the $30.

Here's one for you. As a part of our club membership we get 50% off of food (food only, not the drinks) when dining. They automatically add the 20% tip on the check. So let's say the family goes to the club to eat, we all have water (to make this simple for the math challenged) and the total bill, before discount, is $100. They apply the discount at 50% so the net check $50. Then they add the tip at 20% of FULL PRICE, or $20! I hate it when the tip is automatically added. Yes, I know why they do it.

Our club was the same, but never bothered us either way.

Right, but what does the server have to do with the quality of the food?

I'm saying, theoretically, if the service was exactly the same. The ONLY difference is the price and quality of the food.

By meal layout, I meant that at both places, the meal consisted of an app, 2 drinks, and 2 entrees.

I have complete different experiences at the said restaurants.

                      Examples:

$30 joint - all food is ordered and served when ready. How many times have you been eating your salad and they bring your entree? Quick and fast - almost like they are trying to see how fast they can get me out.
Even people reviews - Place A is great, i only waited 10 min for my meal and the food was good...

$100 joint - more calm and collective. When they start serving your meal they serve your apps, wait for you to finish and then bring your salad. They wait for you to finish your salad before they bring your entree. Your meal is almost served at your pace, there is no rush.
And the reviews - Place B is great, I didn't feel rush and the food was perfect...

Edit - Looks like it took me a few min to type. My statement is obsolete

Not necessarily. I've been to places where alot of money was spent on expensive entrees, yet we were in and out.

But like I said, if everything was EXACTLY the same except the price of the food and the quality of the food (not the service).

FWIW, I will always tip 20-25% on my meal tickets, unless the service was over the top. Then it will be more.

                          New Statement:

If the service is the exact same in both restraunts then the waiter at "Place B" needs to move to "Place A" or vise versa. If I went to Cheeves Bro.'s and got the same service I did at Fridays I would NOT be a happy customer.

But if I got Cheeves Bro.'s service at Friday's I would tip more!

yep...they are turning their tables at a higher rate & waiter spends less effort in service. You would also think the waiter at the high end vs the choke & puke has put in their dues to deserve a tip based on the value.

                              I don't see the confusion...
