I think it's up to the boss to decide these things. If you're the boss, then your definition of late is late. If you're not the boss, then the boss' definition of late = your definition of late.

If those two things don't match, you have a problem.

This is largely a generational thing. I know a lot of older guys who take pride in always being the first ones to work. Doesn't mean they do any more in a day than anyone else, but they sure strut around because they were the first ones there.

I once told a guy who was always bragging about how much earlier he got to work than everyone else that I'm sorry he didn't have a better reason to stay in bed. LOL. That shut him up for a little while.

I do have one rule however - if you're going to be more than 15 min. late, you should call, and if you're 10 min. late you stay 10 min. late. Problem solved.

The only employees I ever wrote up for coming in late were the ones who would turn around and be the first to leave every day.

One of my best employees was always 10 min. late, but he also stayed later than anyone else and got 2x as much done as everyone he worked with.

I'm always close to an hour early, if I'm going to be late, usually I'm just not coming in. Has to be something pretty important for me to not make it. Kinda like flat, green surf! Lol

My take on it is life is too short to stress the small stuff. It's no big deal as long as your not holding anyone up or taking advantage of someone. It really just depends on the circumstances. Id be pi$$ed if my barista was 15 minutes late opening the coffee shop when I need to be in my blind in 30 minutes! And I really don't care if one of my guys strolls into the office at 8:10 - hell that's an hour before I get there anyway! The thing that irritates me is when one of the others tell me he was 10 minutes late.

We have a guy that usually gets there an hour early, but he easily spends 1.5 hours a day outside smoking. Just get your work done and we will be friends.

I am always on time and it is foolish to think that on time is late. If you want me there 15 minutes before 8am then make my shift start at 7:45.

I show up early enough I look like I'm late. Coming in 15-30 mins after the hour when I'm really 30-45 mins early.

My wife and the women of her family have a flexible relationship with time. I have started telling her that we need to leave 15 minutes earlier than we really do. I have also learned that getting ****** off about it is a good way to raise my blood pressure and cause an early death.

Funny, I have 2 buddies that are the same way. I ALWAYS tell them we are meeting 30 minutes before I can get there. Neither of them have EVER had to wait on me.

As an employer I have very little tolerance for late employees. If you're late once or twice a month you'll never get my attention. ...late once or twice a week you'll be looking for a new job.

I am always early but we don't have a time clock. But Houston traffic can affect the drive times.
I say more than once a week means you aren't planning ahead and says something about your work habits

I have an office I work from in my home, so if I'm late, someone better come check on me lol.

I've never punched a time clock since that 2 week stint at McDonald's in high school.

I usually show up at 7am but as long as I am in the office before 10am I am good.
If I'm not there by 11am they figure I'm working from home that day.
They'll shoot me a email or IM if they need me.
If they can't get me there they will text me.

My entire offices have been run like this at four different places over 15 years.

                            Consider myself lucky.
This is where most companies will be in the next decade. For office jobs anyway. Performance will be based on actual quality of work. The time of micro managing bosses who like to know where there employees are at all times is becoming outdated. Good employees won't want to work for those companies. You won't be moved ahead at a company for sitting there sorting emails.

I'm salary and my boss never knows or cares when I'm here or not here, I started the department from scratch and still run it at the bank I work for, I could have all the freedom I wanted, it sometimes drives my wife crazy but if I'm not an hour early then I'm late. I never want one of my employees to be here before I am, my kids are all in their 20's and I still ride them all the time about being early to their jobs, I tell them if their not 30 minutes early then their late, I guess I'm getting soft in my old age, lol

Yep....pretty hard to argue with that one. I've only used that excuse like 5 times. The last time it happened I was 20 minutes late for work. The bad thing was that I was telling the truth every time I used that excuse. What about when you're on time but your boss is late for work? That's irritating....I could have slept 30 more minutes this morning....maybe he has diarrhea. Hopefully he crapped his pants and will call in sick. That'd be cool/hilarious.
