A couple of thoughts here. Personally, I'd rather be 30 minutes early than 2 minutes late. Had a job several years ago where I arrived each day 1 hour early (commuted from Katy to Pearland) to avoid traffic delays. I was known within the entire company as the early one. Got laid off just the same as 30% of the rest of the company when the axe fell. Being more than punctual got me nothing, so I wouldn't feel bad now if I am a few minutes late every now and then.

I'm not a clock puncher but I am always early.
Then one time I had a co-worker that claimed to be in the office at 7:00 a.m. and would leave at 4:00 on the dot. One week, I had some morning meetings with an overseas client, so I had to get in about 6:00 a.m. everyday for about a week. Long story short, I noticed this fool was walking in about 15 minutes before 8:00, just before the majority of people showed up. He did that every day I was there early.

Relief was 20 minutes late last night so I got home late. New operator who was supposed to come in today so that operator on duty wasn't left to run station and inspections solo is a no call no show. He was supposed to be here at 6 am its 11 am.
I show up 15 minutes early every shift so that I can get the plan for the day and the operator on can go home at the allotted time. When the boss says you work from this time to this time I see it as disrespectful to show up late. Even more so when someone else is waiting on you so they can leave. In the case of all the habitually late folks I've worked with, they are not quality workers. They obviously can't read and comprehend a clock I have no idea why folks would expect them to work well at a job.
Then again my knife shop is being built in a few weeks. One step closer to not having to babysit grown men.
