Flufster, good to meet you this afternoon. Good luck!

Will be still hunting in the AM. Xbowhunter, you have a good spot picked out there. We will do our best to run some past you.
Saw a 200 in deer there last season. They will let you kill pigs in the park.

      Stats from Friends of Hagerman:

76 of 88 hunters checked-in and hunted at least one day

32 hunters hunted all 3 days

      37 hunters hunted 2 days

      7 hunters hunted 1 day

A total of 72 hogs were reported killed. An estimated 49 of those came from gun units and 23 came from archery units.

Since hunters were allowed to select where they wanted to hunt, most hunters moved around from unit to unit. Harris and Goode Units were archery only. Big Mineral, Sandy, and Godwin Units were gun or archery. Meyers was closed to hunting. A least 42 gun hunters spent part of the hunt in the Big Mineral Unit where an estimated 48 hogs were taken.

could it be it was wounded and not recovered?

didn't see any visible arrow or gunshot wounds, but as you can see, a lot of the neck is missing...

i would hate to think someone just left it there, but i guess its possible.

I'm hoping the hunter left the hog to go get a game cart from their car. I talked to a guy that parked at Keyes road and had made his way near Deaver Pond and made a kill and had to walk back to his car at Keyes road and drive it to the north entrance of BM and then walk his cart in from there. I'm sure that took at least an hour.
In general we should all think about the remains of our kills in the eyes (and noses) of the general public when the units open back up after the hunt is over. It's not the refuge's job to cart off carcasses after the hunt. We don't want to do anything that might make the refuge question having this hunt or other hunts in the future.

For the life of me I can't understand why they won't have numerous hog hunting opportunities there, they do nothing but destroy a place. I guess the ones that ran over the pigs when I went down refuge road the other day should have picked them up, granted it was off the refuge but makes all us drivers look bad.....

Totally agree the two short hunts they are having are not putting a dent in the hog population out there.

I wish they would have more hog hunts as well. I'm guessing they don't because of the administration and they have to close the hunting units to the general public during the hunts. Maybe they will if the population skyrockets.

I fish a Oklahoma WMA that has hog hunters in it, Shotgun only. Doesn't impact fishing, hiking, etc...Hog hunters are off the beaten path. I think it's just that they "have" to allow hunting to show a balance of use and then make it as difficult and short as possible, Hagerman that is. Doesn't hurt that it's a pretty good revenue stream, I live right by it and we drive through pretty regular for free, same with fishing.

In their defense, I've said the same about the Matador WMA. Guys there hate the hogs and encourage them to be killed during deer hunts but can't just go there to hog hunt, makes no sense. Almost like a farmer that leases his land to hunters but gets mad everytime they show up to hunt.

Both examples are huge places and could easily allow a limited number of hunters on any one day of the week to kill hogs.

                          forgot one picture...

did any TBHer hang a ladder stand in BM, close to Elba creek?

I bet the pig carcass was not left by a hunter. I have seen coyotes chase down pigs in the ag fields of Harris creek unit, eat what they will and leave the rest for the buzzards. As many predators running around that place, it is a very realistic possibility that this was a coyote kill.

You can't always assume it is poor woodsman ship. Sometimes nature is a killer.
