Shockingly cold, and then you're hunting with wet underwear,,,,

For a public hog hunt, those kill numbers are off the charts.

Doesn't hurt that it's a pretty good revenue stream, I live right by it and we drive through pretty regular for free, same with fishing.

In their defense, I've said the same about the Matador WMA. Guys there hate the hogs and encourage them to be killed during deer hunts but can't just go there to hog hunt, makes no sense. Almost like a farmer that leases his land to hunters but gets mad everytime they show up to hunt.

Both examples are huge places and could easily allow a limited number of hunters on any one day of the week to kill hogs.
You may be right about balance of use, I don't think archery only hog hunting would really affect others using the refuge for birdwatching/photography etc. would it?, limit hog hunting to archery only and/or just certain days of the week if they must but I would think the # of hogs they have out there now is doing more damage to the rookeries/food plot for the migaratory birds than if hunter were allowed to thin them out.

Its typical government management or a lack thereof. Not to blame refuge staff but just overall leadership. If they did even just a little research with some common sense, they would find that allowing more hunts and allowing bait would dramatically increase harvest numbers. The state allows bait on some wma's and draw hunts etc. The argument over "aflatoxin" doesn't hold water because private land around refuge is slinging corn 24/7. Just like the state lands, they can require and check corn bags for aflatoxin free, just like the lead shot deal. If they really wanted to help the hog problem they could, too many liberals running things in this country!

Let's take the criticism off this thread please.

The hunt was a great opportunity.

X2. They don't have to let us hunt at all.

And from my experience, spot and stalk is the only way to go. In the pat two years during my draw deer hunts out there, I've seen hundreds of hogs on the foot.

Sure it's a great opportunity, i love hunting there and hopefully will get to many more times over the years. As i said, not bashing the refuge or it's staff, just saying the federal government doesn't have a clue about matters involving game mngt etc. When people keep complaining about the hogs and destruction of property then there needs to be some decisions made to truly control numbers. Just saying. Lol

Dropped the quarters from my hog off at Syracuse today during my lunch break. Jalapeño and cheese summer sausage....mmmmmmmmm.

Took care of the backstraps tonight after baseball practice.

Any suggestions for how to prepare the backstraps?

That's some good eats right there!
Can't go wrong with the bacon wrapped butterfly steaks, stuff some cream cheese, onion, pepper in the middle. Marinade meat in favorite choice and grill those suckers!

I talked with one of the ladies at the check in station. She said they had a helicopter hunt, but didn't say when. The hogs that were killed were gone in less than 3 days.
