I was a child when this mini series played and was enthralled by it. The episode ending scene with the water moccasin biting the immigrant guy on the face has been an image I have carried with me my 36 years. I second Jerps post on reading the books.

It is by far the most accurate and true to life western ever made !! And ever time a new western comes out I get excited about seeing it and then just leave disappointed cause nothing compares to the job that Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones did In this movie . And both have played cowboys in movies since then but nothing compares to Lonesome Dovie .
