    2) He just started bow hunting, this is his first bow kill. I told him he could kill a pig in my stand and he went for it. He's psyched to eat his first bow kill and I'd just like to be safe with the meat.
Thanks for the advice fellas. Appreciate it.

Don't sweat not getting to eat the first bow kill. There are lots of hogs. If he does happen to shoot a big boar again he can strap it out for a good meal or two. If he takes the whole thing tell him to keep it packed in ice for a week and to drain the water daily. Pour some milk over the ice each day and draw out all the blood. The meat will be good and no strong boar scent.

Congrats to him....personally if i found it first thing 8n the morning I would skin and eat but I am not one to waste meat. If I shoot it I want to eat it! I have ate boars up to 250 and hqve never tasted a difference.

Bowhunting hogs when you have neither time or inclination to track and recover the animal is plain wrong. With a bow you know the hog will run after being shot. If you don't have the balls to track bow shot hog alone in the dark, don't bow shoot one.

Use a large rifle like a 45-70 and drop it in place if you have to go home soon after the shot.
          Agreed...

That said...I wouldn't bother going back after it, if it sat all night.

IMO the meat will be safe. It IS a boar hog and sometimes they stink anyway, go recover it asap and cut some straps or something out and give it the old smell test.

Congrats to your brother on hist first bow kill.

I prefer to have temps under 40 if I have meat hanging, and would feel safer if I had gutted the pig last night. Only one way to find out, eat it!

                I don't clean the boars either ,
But 48 ain't cool enough for me to risk.

If I was dirt poor or this was 150 yrs ago it would've been a different story...would've gotten it tonight.
                  This.

and next time shoot them in the guts so they run off and die on the neighbors property.

I've dealt with this a number of times due to bad shots the night before.

Just depends on the conditions and how fast he died. Did he end up in a creek at the bottom of the ravine and died.. Did he live on through the night and die closer to daylight..How fast he cooled off.. etc etc..

I'd check him out.. see if he is bloated and such. If you go to cleaning him and he starts to stink chunk him.
