He can't tan it in a week. That's what everyone is trying to tell you. Some of us know a little on the subject. In the end, do what makes you comfortable. If you take it back to him please do not post another rant when you get it back and it's ugly, or you loose your horns.

I never argued that. I actually asked how long it should take to tan it and nobody answered it. So, how long should it take?

Not everyone has the same definition of "good quality work". If you're happy with it then that's perfect.

It should be sent to a tannery(sp). It always took mine 3 weeks to 2 months just to get the hides back. Before you send it to the tannery, it must be fleshed and salted. This takes close to a week to be done right. So the hide shold not be ready to mount in less than a month if that was all he and the tannery were doing.

This is what I'm thinking. Find a cape and get it done somewhere else. Then file in small claims court and post pics on every hunting forum and on Facebook.
The pics will keep a defamation charge at bay...

And sorry it happened to you.

He's getting the hide from a taxidermy buddy so maybe it's already fleshed and salted, I really don't know. If he tanned it himself how long would the tanning process alone take?

If he "tans" it himself it's not quality. It won't actually be tanned. It will be preserved. You will have shrinkage. I'm not real sure how long that takes. Probably less than a week. I'm certain that's what he is going to do.

I took a axis hide and an aoudad hide in for tanning to North Texas Tannery, along with an aoudad euro, and it took a few months to get back. I was in line so I had to wait some but any taxi or tannery worth their weight won't have any part of it done in anything close to 3 weeks. My Hagerman buck was close to a year and I was tickled pink!!

Good luck brother. It's a really unfortunate situation for you. I hope in the end it turns out with you happy, whatever you decide to do.

He's not getting it tanned in a week - he's using some kind of at - home fast preserving chemical to get his work out quickly.

That is terrible. Hate that you have to go through this. Demand a full refund and take a weekend to camp out with your mount on display for potential customers to see if he won't refund. Seriously, give me a set of eyes, a chunk of styrofoam, some adhesive and I honestly think mine wouldn't be much worse. Heck, it may be better!
