the LA alligator is an excellent example of how sucessful wildlife management can save a species on the brink of extinction

from the 1940's to 60's, the alligator population was nearly wiped out due to poaching, over harvesting, Mother Nature, and the lack of farming & re-introducing hatchlings into the wild

the LA alligator was placed on the endangered species list and was saved during the 1970's to present . Hurricanes and predators cause a very high mortality rate of alliator hatchlings. Biologists will harvest eggs from nests and hatch them in captivity which yields an 85-88% success rate . When the gators are large enough, they are released into the wild.

public land hunters, private land owners, and alligator farmers contribute to the thousands of gators harvested each year all over the State.

Cajun Blake is exactly right. In fact in the past farm raised gaius made up a good percentage of their catch. The were surprised that er did not have a single farm raised gator on the lines this year.

This maybe a stupid question but how do you tell a farm raised gator from a wild one?

Their tails are notched and they have a tag in their foot with certain information on it.
