Yep you find those people in pretty much every type of job, pay them no attention and go about your business. I take pride in any work I do even when I was working at fast food restaurant making $3.25 a hour way back when. Because of this I've always been told when I quit that if I ever needed a job I would always be welcome back.

Sometimes it is the owner/managers that promote/cause that attitude in their employees. It's darn difficult to have pride in your work when the owner/manager is constantly at you to just get it out the door and let the customer sort it... This kind of stuff most often trickles down from the top.

Keep it up
Hard work and caring or in other words of explaining it "giving a ----" will pay off for you in the long run. Keep up the positive attitude.

I say, blow off the comment.
Sure you balance work with family and all but doing what you do for just a paycheck is not where it's at.
Doing a good or great job at what you do is in itself a huge reward with resulting true happiness. That said, gaining more and more expertise in what you do will also generate more $$$ but should not be the sole motivator.

I guess I should just have the "I am here just for a paycheck" mentality.

I think what she could be getting at is there is a fine line between 1) caring about your job and the work you do; and 2) caring so much that you let the job control you.
I know how that is cause I am known for allowing 2) to happen. I care very much so about the work that I do to the point that I get pretty wound up over it when someone isn't doing it right or they overstep their bounds into my territory. Sometimes maybe too wound up, but it is who I am. I want the job done right. If my name is tied to it them its going to be done my way and to my satisfaction. But that can also lead to a nervous breakdown.
My last job was very fast pace and heavily involved. I work Technical Sales for an oilfield company that machined downhole tubular goods. We as the sales staff did everything. Quotes, purchasing, costing, quality control, sales, etc. We were hands on from start to finish. Job about drove me out of my mind because I care and because of the overbearing pressure from the management group.
I have been at my current job now for 2 years and pretty much bored most of the time. You know how people always say they wish they could get paid the same or more, but do less work cause they feel overworked. Don't wish for that, cause it is so boring. But I love the company I work for and the people I work with so there is a trade off. Probably TMI, but that could be where they are coming from. Just my .02 and personal experience.

Integrity in one's work is a great thing. I've always worked under the premise that if you don't like what you're doing you need to quit and go do a job you like. It does wonders for the stress levels.
