    Balance....

It has nothing to do with this.

"Caring about your job" is currently worth around $10 an hour more in pay for the same job description at my company.

Called just "gettin' by" and it is a pervasive thing in today's "ME" generation.

OP--you just keep on keepin' on. Take pride (as you do) and your family will always talk about "My Dad said" or "my Granddad said"

I'm a fireman, we only work 10 says a month, we get paid well beyond our typical daily effort and still most of the folks I work with complain about our pay and benefits and can't get to work on time.

Taking pride in what you do. Trying your best. Serving your fellow man. Outdated concept?

                      Must be a union job

I love what I do and am grateful for every paycheck. I have had co-workers like that also..and they either never advance in position or quite to go make a dollar more an hour somewhere else to fulfill some false gratification of acheviment. I try not to get to attached to those people.

If he/she loses that job, wonder if they would want to work harder and take pride more at the next one?

So far, I have given my company 38 years of loyalty. A decent living with decent benefits for someone with a HS education. It is also dedication to my trade. I started machining when I was 12 years old and never looked back. Every day I try to find a way to make my self better. The younger guy's think us old guy's are nuts. They have NO dedication to either the trade or the company. It's a sad state we're in when there is no dedication from the younger generation.

Yep...it's an individual thing. It's what you do when people aren't watching you that matters. Some folks will always try to get by by doing the very least amount of work possible. In most cases, those with a good work ethic that are dedicated and willing to go the extra mile are rewarded in the end.

Work hard, have integrity, be on time (reliable) and treat people right...you'll end up on top 9 times out of 10. It's called pride.

She knows you work as hard as she does and doesn't want competition when it's time for one of you to get promoted. Keep up the good work!
