if all you care about is work...to the dysfunction of your family, friends and relationships...then I would agree with them. Go to any old folks home and ask them what their biggest regret in life is...and you'll see it's that they spent too much time at work...and not enough with family and friends.

I'm a fireman, we only work 10 says a month, we get paid well beyond our typical daily effort and still most of the folks I work with complain about our pay and benefits and can't get to work on time.
Slackers that don't want to compete often try to talk achievers and doers into slacking too. That's the only way a slacker can feel like he/she is on level ground with an achiever.
I love what I do and am grateful for every paycheck. I have had co-workers like that also..and they either never advance in position or quite to go make a dollar more an hour somewhere else to fulfill some false gratification of acheviment. I try not to get to attached to those people.
So far, I have given my company 38 years of loyalty. A decent living with decent benefits for someone with a HS education. It is also dedication to my trade. I started machining when I was 12 years old and never looked back. Every day I try to find a way to make my self better. The younger guy's think us old guy's are nuts. They have NO dedication to either the trade or the company. It's a sad state we're in when there is no dedication from the younger generation.
25 years ago I started at a company where the president basically said look to the left and right. Those willing to sacrifice will be in a place that exceeds their wildest dreams.
25 years later I know three of those 25 very well and we've all done well above what we deserve. Many of the rest weren't around a year later and the other group have done varying levels of ok.
The worlds not coming to anything . . . . .laziness has always been there and initiative will always be rewarded in the long run

Yep...it's an individual thing. It's what you do when people aren't watching you that matters. Some folks will always try to get by by doing the very least amount of work possible. In most cases, those with a good work ethic that are dedicated and willing to go the extra mile are rewarded in the end.
Work hard, have integrity, be on time (reliable) and treat people right...you'll end up on top 9 times out of 10. It's called pride.
