Oh boy, yall are stirring up a hornets nest with me.lol When we seen the list of stuff we needed to bring this year i was in amazement. They had us bringing way more than one kid would ever use to support people that dont buy it. If a kid truley needs help, thats fine. Give me a list and ill go buy that kids supplies for him, but im not gonna fasilitate people to think they dont have to buy because there will be plenty!! This nonsense has just gotten out of hand!

It's a tough balance. While I disagree with handouts, I also understand that what makes this country great is that we educate everyone. We don't take care of the elite and send the others to work. I work in a school that is 65% economically disadvantaged (living in poverty). Whether or not they can afford stuff or not they need supplies that our budgets can't handle. I don't have an answer. It's just not an easy fix. I do know that a kid doesn't get to choose his folks...

My wife is a teacher and my kids both go to her school. We pay $60 for each kid once a year and the school buys all the supplies. Easy and convenient for the parents. Every kid gets the same type and brand.

I don't mind sending extra pencils, erasers, note book paper, crayons and a few other things but when I take my kids to pick out their folders, notebooks and binders I would have words with the teacher when they brought home a different one. Simple explanation would be two of my kids were required to have 1- 2" binder I could have bought the cheap plastic ones for $4.99 but I knew they wouldn't hold up so I paid $16.99 for very nice binders that will hold up. Yes I would have been mad if they didn't bring those binders back home after the first day.

So they did have the same binder? That is shocking if they did.

The school supplies arent near as bad as the snack bag. We would spend 30-40 dollars to fill it up, and then it would show back up 3 weeks later. This was in a class of 20 kids.

No, it's not the kids fault. However if you can't afford to supply a child with what they need, don't have them. Thank God I don't have to see this an more. The last time I did the kids parents that got the freebies had sculptured nails, the latest fashion and driving a lot newer vehicle than I was. The government is already supplying them with their needs, they just need to manage better.

I spend hundreds of dollars a year on "school supplies" and I don't have any kids. The other night she had over $200 in the cart at walmart made up of pencils, markers, crayons, folders, binders and snacks/stickers. I asked her "don't these kids have parents?" Last year we drove 200 miles to get journals for her students. None of the walmarts had enough of the same one so we picked up 5 here and 6 there and so on until we had enough so everyone had the same design on the outside. I don't like the community idea either but I hate to see kids go without.

My sister is a first grade teacher and what chaps my hide is seeing kids who can't "afford" school supplies wanting handout's but they are wearing brand new Jordan tennis shoes, brand new backpacks and designer uniform shirts. If you can't afford school supplies they how the hell are they able to afford the other stuff. It's called getting your priorities straight.
