We only set and bait ours while we are at the ranch to prevent what you're experiencing. Not trying to be judgmental, just what we do.

Sad to see the lack of them on this topic.

Save yourself the tolls, gas money and hassle. Don't set them unless you can check them while you are there every 12 hrs or so.
