I always thought it was more important to be able to mimic the types of calls that the ducks make. They have calls ducks make to call other ducks to come over here, and feeding sounds etc.

I grew up duck hunting with my Father and he taught me how to make the various calls. I also kept tame ducks and would imitate there calls. Well last year I got back into duck hunting after a 30 year hiatus and low and behold I forgot my duck call on the first day that we went out. Well all we could do is put the decoys out and wait and see what happened. We saw a lot of ducks flying by but not coming into our decoy spread until I started imitating the calls with my voice. And it worked. We started hunting in late December and for the rest of the season I brought my call and used it along with my vocalizations of the ducks. I was only imitating Mallards but it worked for Teal, Pintail and Mallards. Now the Pintails were very weary and would circle 4 or 5 times before they would commit but 90% did finally come in and that is with my vocalizations.

So bottom line as long as the call sounds reasonably close and you are not giving an alarm call or something like that then even with the cheaper calls you can make them work.

PS Don't tell Duck Commander I can call ducks without a call.

Decoys and location are more important than calling in my opinion. Now with that said learning when and what calls to use is the second most important aspect to waterfowl hunting.
