Best thing I can tell you is get a good double reed. Most people who aren't contest callers can't work a single reed properly and IMO are harder to work. I would suggest a mid-volume call and a softer call. Loud calls typically only scare more birds than attract them. I'm in Temple as well and have been duck and goose hunting for 30 years now. I make calls and can get you pointed in the right direction. Or, get the Buck Gardner Double Nasty, or the Echo poly double reed. Both are under $30....

Get a whistle and a Haydel DR85 and you will be good to go.
Now the key is learning how to blow the dang thing. Most people are just out there making noise and have no idea how to blow a duck call. I'm not claiming to be great but I think I am better than a lot of the people in the marsh on Saturday morning.

My 9yo girl has the DR85. It's what I learned on and it's one of the most user friendly calls out there. I carry a Haydel's Dirty Rice and a sprig whistle. If you can whistle like a teal or grunt like a Gadwall, you can kill any duck in our area.
