Growing up we always had 2 deer leases (back before they cost an arm and a leg).

First place was between Mason and Junction with my dad, grandfather, cousins and uncles and I swear there seemed to be deer behind every tree. Target rich environment, great cabin and the most fond memories of my childhood. Been trying to relive or re-visit those times ever since.

Second place was in East tx between Athens and Palestine that we hunted with a bunch of my dad's coaching and teaching buddies out of Dallas. More for the fun and entertainment (card playin-hell raisin!) than the hunting. I think I hunted a solid week one year without seeing a deer. Not sure I ever even saw a buck but every now and then (blue moon?) a really nice deer would be taken. That place sure made me appreciate the Central Tx lease.

A couple hundred acres on Brushy Creek right outside Yoakum, Texas. Saw my first cougar track in the creek bed. I was around 12 years old. I never did hunt that blind that was way down that creek....same direction the tracks went.

When I was a kid, there was no such thing as leasing...at least not where I lived.

Egypt, Tx., Wharton County, 28 acres in 1983. Cost me $200 and I killed a deer there every year. Shot a lot of ducks pass shooting as they went to the pond next door and plenty of squirrels. A few years later, I upgraded to the place next door after several years there. Several friends and family got on the new place. 800 acres which bordered 2000 acres that wasnt hunted and it was bordered by the Colorado river. Great times for a young man.

Duval County 1983 to 1987. 500 Acres between Freer and Benavides. We had some nice deer on that place. My dad even led the muy grande deer contest for 3 hours one year, lol. Never had a real blind on it. We mostly hunted on the ground in makeshift pallet blinds or from the truck depending on weather. I was a crack shot with my marlin 336 in 30-30 and open sights out to 150 yards. I can't even see the front sight now. I could shoot a limit of quail from the camp after breakfast with my 22 short in 1 hr. First place I ever rattled up a deer. It was a doe but she came running in to within 5' of my cousin and I. Probably the best place I had I hunted for the price. We payed $500.00 a year per family. There was only three paid hunters on it. My dad, uncle and a good family friend. Eventually we got out bidded big time by a major construction company owner from Corpus.

I had 435 acres of family land in northern Illinois all to myself until I was 20 and the land was sold. Lived there, worked the farm there, and had the ENTIRE place to myself for hunting. My dad hunted some, but was more interested in teaching me. We got poor, recreational hunting turned into sustinence hunting, and if I didn't come home with meat, we didn't eat. Learned a whole lot of things that I still use to this day.
