Man, we're sunk if hunters don't even understand how wildlife conservation works. How will we ever expect to education the non-hunters if our own ranks don't know that basics? Forget about changing the minds of the emotional anti-hunters. Rational thought won't help them anyway. But surely we can educate ourselves and the rational-thinking non-hunters of the world.
Charles, you ought to know better. It's my opinion, popular or not I do have the right to my opinion, or should I send each post to you first for review?
An animal with no value gets no protection. Many examples of this. I believe the Namibian government offers 5 hunts a year and there are 5000 black rhinos. Poaching for rhino horn will be a much bigger threat than sport hunting 5 older males. Trust me, the guys in Africa know how to age animals and will only shoot the most mature.
Testify Doc. There is some hypocrisy taking place alright. **** tree Humpers.

You are correct you do!!! But on this topic ur dead wrong.
The right thing and the best thing for a species is not necessarily popular to a mass audience. Oversimplification and the need for a 5-second soundbite about everything are the culprits. To many people, "endangered" signals the need to "protect" those animals left; killing one of an already limited number makes no sense to them because that's where they stop listening. Those folks do not want to hear that taking away an old and impotent animal, which is failing to produce more offspring on its own, and in the process preventing it from killing or at least interfering with younger males, which are capable of reproduction, directly equates to a net increase to rhino population numbers. Furthermore, it's a bonus that $350K is raised to prevent poaching, which is done without regard to age and certainly makes no effort to boost potential herd numbers. While it was definitely a PR gamble on DSC's part to auction the hunt due to a pretty predictable mass reaction, it is also highly commendable. The five rhinos were going to be killed in any case under the Namibian government's program; adding a hunting value to the conservation effort just helps in prevention of indescriminate poacher-killing of the animals.
I just believe there are alternative ways to achieve the same results for this particular species.
Are there other ways to raise the money? Possibly
Are there other ways to remove an older male, if he is in fact "past his prime" and still dominating younger males? I'm sure there is while at the same time enjoying it's existence.
After all, animals are for all, not just hunters. The one sided argument that a, God forbid, "liberal" have any opinion on hunting is short sided.
