Glad to see this thread revived. Love me some nilgai. One of these days I'm going to go after one with the bow. Here's the bull I took with my .338 in 2013

Best bud had a several gun spots in the berreta pasture on the Kenedy for a many years, we whacked the s**t outta of the blue bulls and even more cows, I agree with earlier posts, gotta have a big gun, nice hunting rig (fully outfitted) and young bucks to do the work. Will post pics mañana.

That black bull looks OLD! Never seen one shaped like that. I don't know how old they get but I bet he's it. Would love to know somehow.

My son took this young bull on NWR land last fall on a TPWD Draw Youth hunt. This was the toughest yet most rewarding hunt I've ever done. Got him on the last day of the hunt. The Nilgai's eyesight is unbelievable. Took him with a .270 and he went less than 100 yds. Dragging him out of the brush and cactus was not easy. We were also fortunate that a couple of fed wardens came in and helped us get him out. Great thing is on youth draw the permit is free. I will echo what others have said, this is the best tasting game meat I've ever had.
I saw a monster Nilgai on Laguna Atascosa in Dec on the bow hunt but never got in range.

Anyone know when the rut is for nilgai? Been seeing some post on instagram of nilgai fighting recently.

January, February is typically the peak of the rut. We see it in December as well.

This was my first on public land.

Shot these two in December on the king ranch.

Going again Monday after Easter to take my dad to shoot one. Hope we get lucky and get a big bull.

Here is mine from the King this past friday 4/7/17. Quickest hunt I think I've ever been on. Got really lucky the first place we stopped. We started walking down the road and saw 5 or 6 cows and a cple bulls cross the road about 400 yards from us. Guide said "one of those was a good bull, let's go have a look." Took 10 steps and a lone bull stepped into the road. Broadside at 350. Got on shooting sticks and he turned and started walking right towards us. Guide just kept saying "let him come, let him come." He kept coming and was none the wiser. Acted like he didn't even see us standing in the wide open. At 80 yards he hesitated slightly so I hit him with the .300 WM slightly off center of the chest. Ran up to where he went into the brush and put another through his shoulder as he was laying down to die.

Met guide at the gate at 0630, nilgai was in the cooler by 0815.

Already planning the 3 day bow hunt.
