Several years ago, I was at Tom Thumb shopping with my 24 year old daughter, I am 53. I have shopped at this store for 25 years, and know most of the cashiers. I had a full cart of groceries, including a 12 pack of beer. When checking out, the manager came over and requested my daughters ID, she did not have her purse with her, and he refused to sell me the 6 pack. I sent my daughter to the truck, and he still would not sell me the beer. I left the store and have not been back. I raised hell with the corporate office, to no avail.

When I had the same experience at Lowes, the asst mgr made a mistake when she showed a bad gesture to my wife. I was at the other tool dept when my wife came back walking back to me & almost in tear, wife says let's go dad, I asked what's wrong? My wife says' these people does not want our business, So I stormed to the customer service & asked for the mgr my wife talked to. All I said to the manager is these. Obviously, you don't care about eating, Is these the way you people treat loyal customers? The mgr had no clue she had just talked to my wife, (at the same time my wife walked up and grabbed my arm & tells me, let's just leave dad it's not worth the hazels) yes, even that so called mgr knew, what I was implementing to when I said, She did care nothing about eating. I do sales, I know who puts bread & butter on my table. As loyal customers, me & the wife went back the next day & spoke with the 1st mgr in charged of the store, well to make the story short. He sold us the item that we needed to buy the night before, at a factory price plus no tax. They knew.....

I hope our Kroger never gets that way. Every time we've been nearly every lane is open and we rarely wait in line. I've also never had a bad experience at any HEB or Randall's but it really has more to do with the worker's you interact with IMO. Home Depot in Conroe would need to have a product that the Lowe's in Conroe, Woodlands, and McCoy's in Huntsville didn't have to get my business. Never once had a good experience there and actually saw a customer nearly get in a fist fight with an associate. Terrible customer service at that place.

I can't stand Kroger. They are incredibly expensive (the card only brings their prices down to the "normal" price), never have what I need, and never have a lane open or if they do there is never anyone there. On more than one occasion I have had to walk around looking for someone to check me out.
I love HEB, but sometimes, when I have a lot of items or heavy items, I wish someone would offer to help me to my car.

Dear Robin:
Thank you for contacting Kroger. We continue to offer self checkout because it is popular with our customers, who continue to choose it for its convenience. However this should not be the only option for checkout. We expect sufficient lanes to be opened insuring that our customers can check out in a timely manner. We're always working to make it easier for customers to checkout and exit the store more quickly. I will make sure to send your comments to management so they are made aware of your concerns.
I hope that you find this information helpful. If I can be of further assistance, please simply respond to this email or call 1-800-576-4377. Thank you for shopping with us.
Sincerely,
Brian Murphy
