Sounds like a bunch of BS. You should have snapped a picture of their faces when you were walking out the door.

YES! I have said the same thing many times. Either put me on the payroll or give me a discount for doing an employees job!

Looks like she at least got some positive feed back from Kroger on their facebook page.

        Self checkout = lost jobs

Asst store mgr also told me some time ago that stores like Kroger put the pressure on store mgt to use them or they get in trouble. Mainly becuse of the amount of money they spent to have them installed.

I bet they thought they would pay for themselves with the amount of cashiers and such they could get rid of.

Way too much for self checkout! My wife ONLY does HEB Signature in the Woodlands if doing serious shopping. She has actually met and talked with the CEO of HEB twice........they actually care about customer service.

If I wanted to check/bag groceries, I'd get a job at Kroger........same goes for Home Depot. That said, I'm a better grocery checker/bagger than most of the people working there.

They do it to keep overhead down, but the prices keep going up.

I would have done the same Robin. Part of our company moto is "We exist because of the customer." Seems that mentality is slipping within some companies.

We're an HEB household and the one close to us is an HEB Plus. They always have multiple cashiers so checking out is usually pretty easy. Lowes on the other hand is all about the self checkout. They may open one lane and the line will wrap around the checkout area. I have no problem using the self checkout but they have been messed up for a long time. I try to pay with debit and it won't work so after a few minutes an employee will come over. They always say "The machines have been giving us trouble today." They've been giving me trouble for over a year! lol

Customer service is dead. Having worked in various grocery stores years ago I'm amazed at how horrible they are now. Krogers checkout is probably the worst.

I had two baskets after checking out that they loaded. I originally had one when came for checkout. They never offered to help me out and left me with two baskets.

Self checkout is a joke btw!

May be a simple explanation for their late refusal/response, Union.

Friend of family (teenager's first job) just got a job as sacker at new Kroger store. Was forced to sit through a Union meeting and was then pressured to sign-up. He refused and then was berated by Union Rep.
During that Union meeting some of these issues, what they could refuse to do what contract reqd., etc were apparently addressed in that meeting.

Nope, don't know who that is. Just seems childish to walk out at that point. I would have checked out and then not go back to the store. I don't choose my grocery store based on customer service.......quality of food and price for me. But I let my wife do most of the shopping.

FTR.....Alvin HEB sucks.....only thing I will go there for is 1905 Vanilla ice cream!

I agree with what you did and agree there should be a checker. usually, a produce guy or someone on night crew doubles as a checker so that shouldn't be a problem. They stop stocking the shelves for a few minutes, check you out and they go back to stocking shelves. Personally, I like self check out simply because they have decided that training people how to bag groceries is useless and therefore they just throw all your stuff into whatever bag they feel like. My wife gets mad at me because I always tell the clerk to move out of the way, that I want to bag my own groceries. Either that or I have to ask them to please put all the cold stuff together. When I was 18 I worked at a grocery store and we had to attend "bagger training" and learn how to bag groceries correctly. Even had contest to see who could do it the fastest with 100% accuracy. Now, just throw everything into one bag and call it good.

Wish we had an HEB just for their selection up here but the mack daddy Kroger by the house is a good one and about as close as I've seen to a HEB thankfully. .

I'm a big fan of the self checkout for smaller orders because I value that 15 minutes of waiting in line saved than the 15-20 minutes to show them "I'm not a checker by God". Plus I get to wave at those "principal proving" people in line as I am walking out to my vehicle 15 minutes before them.

That being said, I'd have told them to pound sand with that amount of groceries just like you did. The manager should have checked you out himself. Hopefully corporate rattles some cages on your behalf. Hell you should have told them you are related to Danielle Bradbery...

We really miss our HEBs after 13 years in Austin. That was the OP's first mistake....given a choice why go to Kroger?
