$1 million insurance policy is a joke. That's what my car insurance coverage is.

I'm curious as to why the school and city don't have insurance coverage?

There is no free money. That money comes from those of us who work our butts off. I don't think it should be handed out (free) in the North, East, West or South.

I feel terrible for the people of West but I also don't believe it's the federal government's responsibility to rescue people from accidental or even natural disaster. If you live in coastal regions you should have I durance coverage for hurricanes and floods, if you live in earthquake country you should have earthquake insurance, if you live in tornado country you should have tornado insurance, etc, etc. If you live in the shadow of a fertilizer plant or chemical plant you should be smart enough to have catastrophic insurance.

I'm not sure how the federal government got into the business of playing nanny to the country but its not their job.

Like someone else posted, this is Texas and we can take care of our own; without looking to Washington for help they have no business providing. That's what charities are for.

So what would happen if the school caught fire and burned down, instead of being damaged from an explosion? Wouldn't the school district have enough insurance to cover that type of loss?

I am sure the districts insurance is not paying and trying to force the fertilizer plants insurance to cover the loss. The sewer system and roads are another story entirely. That is a infrastructure issue, and there are other government programs both state and federal to assist with that.

I'm gonna agree with those that say FEMA shouldn't have to cover it. It IS about personal responsibility.

There's gonna be $10 million spent just on deciding who should get the one million.

I'm sure their insurance company already and happily wrote that check and the majority of it will end up in the hands of the attorneys involved.

Yes 1 million dollar policy is ridiculous. I live in west although my house wasn't destroyed. It shouldn't be the people or the towns fault that the fertilizer plant was under insured. Alot of the people that had insurance there companies are not covering them because they did not have explosion coverage. That being said some kind of aid from the higher ups would be greatly appreciated. But if not we are a strong town and we will make due with what we have. But it's funny how everyone can set back and say "oh they shouldn't be covered". Just remember disaster can strike in your own back yard. We never expected this to happen. So be careful what you spout of about.

Sometimes it takes a disaster to make everyone else consider things they have never thought of before. I hope you're able to make all the repairs you need and I'm glad you're ok.

I pay an extra premium for explosion coverage.

It only applies to my toilet though.

I hadn't heard about the insurance companies not willing to pay. That's disgusting! I wish the media would jump on this story!

My prediction is you won't have to hold your breath long on this one before the decision is overturned at the highest level, to buy even more votes.
