I came close to hanging up the bow several times. I went through a series of hitting deer with no recovery. I've learned a lot over the last few years especially about recovery and tracking. As well, I've learned to settle my nerves while shooting and after the shot. Il say I had a good 4-5 deer where I either shot and missed or didn't recover before finally putting one in the truck. Then, I had another 4..... It's a learning thing. Some people get it faster..... I guess I wasn't one of them.
A good friend of mine owns and operates an exceptional hunting operation in Illinois. He has some serious giants walking around. In IL you get two tags as a non res. He urges people to shoot a doe ASAP. One for qdma, but also to help settle and prepare you for when THAT buck walks out. He's found that the hunters who shoot the does first have far better shots, recovery records on these giants that really rattle your nerves. Something to think about.....

My first attempt at a deer was doe up at LBJ. My oldest daughter was with me and this doe came out at about 40yds. I say 40 cause I really didn't know as I was guessing. Shot right over her...
After that I practiced a lot and took a doe at 11yds out of the same tree as the first attempt. Not a great shot and had to knife her.
Then I found TBH and it's great wealth of info and bow hunt exclusively now.
