I am in the process technology program at HCC. My professor has told us for the past month now that there are some new NG plants being built in Mont belvieu. They’re going to need ALOT of people to help build them. They will not find enough help in the area. He told us to go to the construction sites and speak to the company there, you will not be able to apply online. If you can get a job while the plant is being built you will have a job for life. You will know more about that plant that anyone ever will, working there. Something to think about.
I am not sure what companies is building out there, but I would image there is a lot of construction going on from Mont Belvieu, to Baytown to Freeport, almost every big refinery is building a new NG plant next door that should be completed by 2016.

If you can pass a drug / alcohol test and show up for work.

Most welders use a DWI as a badge of honor..... jk

It doesn't hurt to apply regardless. If the dwi is all you have, then you would qualify for an enlistment waiver into the army. While you may not want to be away from your little one, giving them insurance and you a steady job should be on your mind. Good luck to you, and if youn decide to change your mind, I know the Army recruiters well in your area. I'm a little far for you. Good luck in your search

I have met people in the oilfield with bad BAD records...a DWI is way too common and I don't think many companies consider it a big deal. You just won't get to drive a company truck. I worked with a guy not too long ago that killed someone in a bar fight, accidental but he spent 10 years in prison and he had no problem getting on with no experience. Heck if anything, I feel like an outcast out here for not having a record

I've applied with Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Key Energy, Lewis Resource Management, Leam Drilling, Oil States international, Tex direct drilling, Chesapeake and many more without any feed back.

In person or online? It really does make a difference. And you might have to start at one of the small independents first, gain some experience and then move up and get on with the big boys, but there are way to many people moving into the area they can hire on the spot to hire a guy in Houston.

You gotta walk in to these places...too many people can say something on an online form and get no response and then sell themselves immediately in person. I'm not going to take a guys online app saying he has 10 years experience and is a hard worker near to heart as I would someone walking in and asking. It's a lot like online dating services...what you have pictured online isn't always what walks in the door on date night.

And who knows, you might walk in after someone just quit and it clicks perfectly. A lot of places have stacks and stacks of online applicants but it's that one person that walks in and makes an impression that gets hired.

Have you even tried a temp agency?
I know halliburton uses National Employment Service Corporation to bring in new guys and pay is decent for a guy getting his foot in the door.

I'm 20 years old trying to get my foot in the door and work my way up with a company. Extremely hard worker have grown up on a ranch all my life doing work around there. I believe a thing that is making it so hard for employment is I got a DWI when I was 18. Dumb decision that I have learned from and no longer drink anymore but it's on my record so it shows up on background checks. I don't have much experience in the working field but I've never been put to a task and was not able to do it or learn it.
If anyone has any ideas for me about a job with a DWI please let me know. Also school is not a option.

There is alot of good advice on this thread and you need to listen to it. I will say this, I am a bit confussed by your postings.

You indictaed that you are "willing to move anywhere for a good job" and it sounds to me that you are not willing to move since you keep looking for jobs that are not in the oil patch in Midland/Odessa or South Texas. This is where the jobs are and this is where you will have to go. If you are not willing to move, than that is fine.....just be aware that if you are not, then your opportunities may be limited, and dont tell people that you are willing to move when you are not.

Also you noted that you want a "good job." Please keep in mind that in order to get a "good job" most of us here started at the lowest of the low, paid our dues, and worked our way up. Be happy to have a job and make it a good job by finding the positivies in it or using it as a steping stone.

I am sorry if this sounds harsh, but part of what I do is manage people and hire/fire them..and it sounds as if you need to figure out what you are willing to do and go to find work....and once you figure that out you will find something. I have read several opportunities on this thread, you just have to take them.

Dont just go there after you have had lunch. Be there at the door before they show up in the morning and unlock the door. Ready to get dirty!
