They can be used dry. Lube in a bearing is a tradeoff between protection from wear/corrosion and reduction of speed. The oil actually builds up ahead of the rolling ball and slows it, albeit slightly. Personally in fresh water I think a little oil is a good thing and a must for saltwater. For fresh only, ONE drop of rem oil in each, one drop of speedX in each for salt. I have never used rocket fuel so I can't say if it is better. SpeedX has worked well for me so far. There are various royal purple options which I would like to try, they are just tough to come by in small quantities.

        I have only owned Shimano's....Citica's and Curado's

Never really had a reason to look for anything else...just my .02 cents

They don't need lube to work and they will cast a mile without oil but they will be a bit more noisier. The added oil will help control the cast better...meaning, you will get a bit of braking to help control over run of the spool. Without oil, you then are using the brake blocks and or magnets on the casting reel entirely to control over run of the spool.

Some may like them without oil, other's may like them with one drop of oil and others may find they need 2-3 drops of oil.....to help control over run.

Ceramic bearings are a major upgrade to any CASTING baitcasting reel.

The good thing about ceramic bearings....if you skip maintenance and get caught on a fishing trip that runs for days......you can cast for days on end and not diminish any distance and or casting performance with ceramic bearings. With steel.....over hard use, casting performance falls off.

Do you know if they make a ceramic drive shaft bearing and anti reverse bearing or just the spool bearing's? Ive done ceramic spool bearings but that pesky drive shaft would be great to replace with something that doesnt corrode as easily.

Drive shaft is a yes most likely. If you can get the dimensions with a caliper, BOCA can get you a bearing it seems, even if your particular reel model isn't listed. I have never seen a ceramic anti reverse though- It may be too slick to hold tight and not reverse.

That makes two inquiries that I know of...

Should tell the OP something about Shimano.

Yeah I'm actually rebuilding a shimano curado bantam SF that was given to me currently. The insides are fine just the plastic is broken up and he insides are exposed. I fish the new chronarchs and have one new curado. Shimano for me is the ticket for bass reels and Abu 6500 c3's for my catfishing setups. I'll have to say the citica is a good reel for the money.

I bet you are right on that, make's sense. They're easy to change anyway! I need to build up a low profile baitcaster just for the surf.

Crazy blast from The past! I am considering a new reel, and since it has been a looooong minute, what are current model recommendations for sault and fresh?

Shimano Citica I believe has been discontinued. The Shimano SLX series is really good and range from $100-190. I have 2 of the SLX DC and Riley has the SLX XT. Also have probably 6-7 Citicas and 2-3 lews that I bass fish with
