I grew up in Houston. Moved to Palestine area when I was 16 and swore I would never live in a metro area again. Life changes, I have been in DFW area for 13 years now. I really like living in Red Oak, but would be gone in a heart beat if I could. For me it would be the hill country around Kerrville/Camp Verde area or back to east Texas around Palestine.

I like the coast too much. The hill country is great to visit and hunt, but I'm drawn to the coast.
I would say though, the optimal climate deal probably isn't happening in Texas. It's either too hot or get's on the cold side. Heck in Houston, we have days where you wake up in the a.m. and want to throw on a jacket...by mid afternoon, you want short sleeves.

I have lived a bunch of places but to me, there is no place like the piney woods of east Tx. Im back here to stay(GOD willing). Big deer, tons of public hunting opportunity. Great lakes and rivers, 2.5 hours to the coast which is just right . Close enough to run down there but at least the hurricanes will weaken.
There is just no place like it.

I grew up in the DFW Metroplex and live in Denton. I hope to be able to move to the Lubbock area. All my wife's family is out there and being close to family is important. Good thing about Lubbock (Denton too for that matter) is that you are close to good healthcare and an international airport, but can be out in the sticks in 30 minutes or less.

Boerne, Bandera, Helotes, Bulverde & Castroville are all decent communities near San Antonio. Each, except for Castroville, are essentially Hill Country communities (caliche rock base soil) and Castroville is edging just a tad to the South of that Caliche escarpment.
I live in the Stone Oak area near Camp Bullis (extreme North SA). It's hill country oaks, caliche and whitetail here. Family lives in Kerrville (the rest of my tribe).
The Hill Country around San Antonio puts you in the Hills and or South Texas Brush in moments. The coast is only a bit over 2 hours away....meaning you are far enough away from it if and when a major CANE blows thru but close enough to grab your fishing gear and hit a fish in the same morning without a lot of logistics to do so. You also have the 7th largest city in the nation with everything you would ever want or need from an Urban center.
