Yep, been building fighter aircraft for 33 years now. I've always had a knack for designing and building things by hand. I can usually build it better than I can buy it.

I can change the oil.......that's about the extent of my mechanical skills.

I feel like I have a knack for building stuff, especially out of wood.
I can do a break job or an oil change, but I wouldn't feel comfortable tearing into an engine.

Mechanical. If I run into something I can't handle, (doesn't happen often), I know somebody that can do it.

Very seldom do I find something I can't fix... My daughter even bought me a shirt that says " my daddy can fix anything " .. Lol

I figure mechanics have to make a living, so I didn't learn to fix anything.
There's very few parts on bows, and fixing them is mostly doing string work, so I can do that.
Fishing for a living is simple enough, you just cast a lure out, wind it back, and when (if) something pulls back, jerk hard.
If it runs on gasoline, I have #'s programmed into my phone.

I don't know about the confidence part but I can tackle alot of things if I think it will save a good amount of money. If it is something I think will take more time and require a bunch of new tools that I probably will never use again I will pass it off to a mechanic.

I tackled the high pressure oil pump on my diesel, thought it had just a leak and thought i could save $1200 doing it myself. Went without a truck ( I had another something to drive) for over a month before I gave up and hauled it to the mechanic. Turns out I was doing everything right but the pump had "died" somewhere in the process. Still ended up costing me the same as the quote, BUT, I ended up with a few more tools out of the deal. I bought a pump online for half of what the stealership wanted and just paid my mechanic for the labor.
I also not above asking the mechanic to tell me what is wrong and then deciding if I can fix it myself and just pay him a diagnosis fee

I think I am a tech. I spent about 20 years in automotive audio and security and now lead tech at four wheel parts.

I've figured out over the years that I am really good at reverse engineering stuff. I can look at something and figure out how it works and how to fix it.
