Has anyone been doing any experiments with attractants?

Over the past few years I've found the following:

Deer Cane: works ok if mixed with other stuff and buried (corn, corn meal, acorn rage, salt etc). Cows love it.

Acorn Rage: deer seem to like it if mixed with hand corn vs. plain hand corn. I like this stuff ok. Cows really love it. Smells kinda good too.

C'Mere Deer: rip off. Poured some out several times and it just layed there until the rain washed it away. Deer and hogs never touched it. It's a scam and an expensive one at that. Cows wouldn't even eat it.

Black Magic: same as Deer Cane. Works ok if mixed with other goodies and buried in a post hole. Not good if it is by itself. Cows love it too.

Deer (mineral) block: the brownish semi-soft kind. Deer and hogs will eat it over time so I buy it from time to time and set it under my feeder. Cows go crazy over it.

Salt: A lot of the products you buy in powder or liquid form contain a lot of salt. Again, pour some in a post hole with other goodies and the deer and hogs will wallow it out. Cows go crazy over it and will lick the ground long after it is gone. Deer and hogs will come lick the dirt after it's gone too so that's good. And salt is cheap.

Buck Candy: Haven't tried this yet. From other reviews it sounds like hunters have had success with it so I might have to try it. Just gonna guess that cows love it too.

There you have it, my review.

Thanks. Great survey. Seems like corn was in most of these mixes also.

Great thread Subscribed. The only store bought ones that I've really used are the Trophy Rock and the Blocks.

I really like the Trophy Rock and I've seen deer go straight to it. Cows like it OK. I've never seen them all hovering around it or anything, yet. I know the hogs like it, because if I don't make a rock ring around it they will roll it off somewhere. It also doesn't seem to "melt away" as fast as similar block style attractants do.

The Blocks get hammered. Especially late season. What I like to do to make them last way longer, is suspend them about 4' off the ground. Drill a hole through it, thread wire and tie it to a rock with a hole...Hanging from a tree branch.

I will also cut the tarsal glands off of a hot doe or dominant buck and hang them around my set ups. They won't last long, with the dead tissue. But they are great while they last!

Good info. What type of blocks are you using?

I've started carrying a small glass bottle and some ziplocs with me whenever I hunt.

Any doe with a full bladder, her urine ends up in the bottle. Any buck, his tarsal glands end up in a ziploc.

Pre rut, rut, or post rut, I have found nothing that works as well. Doesn't last long, but for a few days, seems like the "magic ticket". We can't feed or bait in IL or WI, and can't put out more than 1 oz. of liquid attractant, so this has become my only "bait" I have found to be proven.

And I have spent a lot of $$$ in Texas trying every product sold, with VERY mixed results.

I like Buck Candy and the ground sugar beets. Had good luck with both of them. But my favorite is just plain old apples. Ill buy a Bag and literally just throw them out from my stand, that way they bust up a little

Buck Candy was the ticket last year according to the GS's. Wonder what happened this year

You ever notice all of these attractants of which I've tried most of have one similar base to them....CORN! They all have corn as a base or have you mix with...you guessed it, CORN.

IMO...on a year like this they will hit the corn when they feel like.

I will say that I've recently given Big & J BB2 a try and they seem to prefer it. I've trid it for three hunts on a hand corn route with a pile of plain corn and a pile of corn mixed with BB2. The BB2 received more thantwice the attention.

I don't like it in the feeder. When I last filled my feeder I mixed some in the first 100 pounds of corn and it left a gummy mess around the spinner and mech. Additionally the cows really like the smell of it, very similar to bagged cattle feed in smell.

                  Great thread, really good info.

I keep seeing a commercial on the Outdoor Channel for this stuff called Big Tine and when they show it the first thing that sticks out to me is the Corn.

Tried Acorn Rage this week, the deer barely touched it. I saw mature does and immature bucks and fawns eat on the blocks we have out. I shot a buck yesterday, guess what he had in his stomach? Acorns and fresh feeder corn.
