Larry Weisuhn's method starts with a knowledge of what the general "frame" score is of a mature buck off your lease area--width, mass, main beam length. Then you just add the tine lengths. I always used 95 as a base on our La Salle County lease, and was usually right on the spot. Biggest problems is with the exceptional buck--very wide, very narrow, or really massive, but you still are in the ballpark.
I evaluate the buck and assign a "small, medium, large" frame size--90,. 95, or 100 points, and then just tally up the tines.

I usually start with 87 down.

On 8pt freaks, better start with 99...

I read TD's method way back when and starting using it. It's a spot on method for sure. Tuthdoc was a deer genious in my opinion so I always put my ear to the floor when he spoke thru TBH. I sure do miss him...

I had forgot about this post.

I agree he was a walking encyclopedia. Wish I had the opportunity to meet him.

I just spent a bunch of time going thru his threads (if you have time, do yourself a favor and search threads started by Tuthdoc ) but I couldnt find the thread that i was thinking about.

Any oldtimers know what im talking about?
That thread was the one that I think of when I'm trying to do it in my head on the fly.

I'm not sure I understand the term "down" in this scoring method. "Down" what? Is he basically saying he assumes a deer is 95 and then adds tines?

I was just searching for this thread to refresh my memory, so I'd thought I'd bump it....

What would be the "Down" for the average mature buck in San Saba/Mills County?

85 has worked for me in the lampasass area and most of north and west Texas. That's a 16" spread so if anything you might be a little low but you will be very close. Use this method on a few of your mounts to test it and I bet you will be within a couple of inches.

Here's an example of Dreamer1's Brady deer. So I guess the "down" here is right at 80. The Mounted picture is after it lost a little length off the tips to a squirrel.

This is almost the exact DOWN that Tuthdoc describes in Mailman's post above.

I think you are doing it backwards. His "up" would be in the 40s and the "down" would be in the 80s
