He took the pic with a cell phone, and forwarded a couple of times, so I apologize for the poor resolution.

The problem is that my buddy is somewhat the BS artist that no ever believe's.

Also, the rub gets real close to the ground, which I guess a big buck can do that, plus the shavings seem very large, as if a knife could have done.

On the other hand, it does look uneven, like where the gap is between the brow tines.

At this point I think it's probaby real, but with so many bucks yo hunt with so little time, its hard to decide what to hunt.

So, what do you think? Big buck rub or early trick or treat.
Let him sit over this rub for a few days and see how the hunting is!

I agree, reason is. The tree is a dead tree. And all those big pieces of white looking wood you see on the ground is from woodpeckers pecking at the tree.

Looks like the wood was "shaved" from the tree. For that I am going with fake.

Not fake at all. Come winter time Porcupines will eat the bark off trees. I have seen lots of the same on my place an watched one doing this just last week.

looks to me that it is a dead tree to begin with.
large chunks of bark and meat. the gouges kinda look like the worm eaten wood when you pull the bark off of a years dead sweet gum tree. there is not any wood hair or fiber strands(witch ever you would call it) that you would see with a fresh rub on a live tree.
As I said, looks to me that the tree is dead and i have never seen a fresh rub on a dead tree.

After reading a few other comments, your bsing friend may just not know what a real rub looks like. just sayin.
