settle a dispute - where is better to live

This topic is the "dead horse" around our house, but I thought I would bring it to the brain trust on the GS.

Background, I am from a small town outside of Austin. Grew up on land and in a small community. I married a city girl, grew up in Houston and never lived anywhere else. Right before we married I moved from Austin to Houston to get married. I thought I would give the big city a try. After many years of living here, and now having kids, the debate still goes on as to whether it would be better for our family to live here in Houston, or move back to Austin. In both cases, we would be living in the "city", as I doubt I will ever make it back to land. But what is the thoughts of you folks. Which place is better and why? What are pros and cons? Personal experieces? I consider us all like minded and welcome an unbaised opinion.

    Thanks...

Houston or Austin.........6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other. Not much difference IMO.

If you have to live in town, Austin...and it's not even close!

That said, I'd live in Oklahoma, or Louisianna before I'd live in Houston....

Man...city is city. I would do my down right darnedest to live outside of a city. Maybe not on a plot of land, but not right in a city.

We're similar in that I grew up in the country while my wife grew up in Houston. There's no doubt in my mind that Austin is more preferable than Houston. Heck, Waco is preferable to Houston for me. I really dislike this city, but it is what you make of it.

That being said, country living >>>>>>>> city living

I moved from Houston, well Magnolia/Conroe area it was growing out that way and was terrible so I can only imagine how living in Houston would suck!!

Austin is a little smaller, but it is still cramped, I guess it depends on exactly where in Austin you would live, but I would still take Austin proper over Houston proper any day!

Born in Odessa, lived in Kenai, AK, had my kids in Anchorage, moved to Mt. Vernon, now live in Austin. Prefer the country, but it it has to be a city, I pick Austin. Lived in H-Town for six months and hated it.

I have lived in Houston before and it was ok. I like Dallas/Fort Worth better than any of the ones you mentioned

AUSTIN! Get out of that humidity!

Otherwise, whatever location best suits the needs of your family.

Austin. More of a central location and easy to get out into the hill country when you need a break from the city

That's saying a lot if someone is willing to live outside of Texas before they'd live in Houston. Ouch...

What part of Houston do you live in?
What part of Austin would you move to?

I was born and raised in Katy, Tx. and lived their until I was 18. Then moved to Austin for school, and stayed for 13 years. Got married had 3 kids, and really liked being in the center of Texas. Was offered a great job in Houston so we moved back to Katy. We moved to Katy Proper, its a great place. My wife and I would rather live in Katy then Austin, or Houston. Good luck.
