Over 10 years of working in Austin and the Austin area, I have learned to like the city. I dont know much about Houston but what I have seen of the city, I think Austin suites me better. With that being said, I live in Shiner......

well the conversation has been plentiful. i aprpeciate all of the views and comments. here are some of our arguements. alot of which yall have touched on.

      wife:
      -lower pay
-not near family. mine is close, but not big. hers is all in houston, and large.
      -tougher job market
-upside - would be something differnt for her

      mine:
-able to live out of town and commute in for a good job
      -smaller than houston
-able to put the country back in the boy
-able to teach my boys some of the things i learned growing up on land
      -closer to the deer lease
-downside - less money may make it harder on a one income family

Austin is kept Weird! But I would rather live there than Houston! The only hills in Houston are overpasses...

            Hippies or hurricanes.....pick your poison.

You couldn't pay me enough to move to Houston. Austin isn't much higher on my list of places to live, but I might consider it if I had to. I'm not a city person though. San Antonio and Fort Worth are about the only big cities (and FW isn't THAT big) that seem like Texas these days. None of the other big cities in Texas feel like Texas anymore.

I have 5 acres for sale in magnolia close to the woodlands. You can be as country or city as you like . Also, look into fulshear on the west side. I think you just have to embrace a drive and you haven't found the right part of Houston. Not saying its the greatest place to live but work pays the bills, not the scenery. I got to where I enjoyed my commutes. I used that time to talk to family and friends and now that I don't have one, I have grown apart from many friends.

But, if I could live on lake Travis I'd do it in a heartbeat or on the outskirts of Austin. Just don't make me have to go into Austin! Overpriced and WEIRD!

Austin is Texas' San Francisco, if you could have Houston Politics in Austin then it would be one of the best places to live in the world. Austin is just far enough the inlaws won't come by too frequently but close enough you can visit any weekend.

Something tells me this thread isn't going to actually settle any dispute.

                      Just saying....

I love the Austin area but my job dictates being in or around houston. I grew up in north east houston, lake houston area, and loved it. My inlaws are in New Braunfels and its really nice but being in perto-chem, this is the area for me. There are some very nice areas around the city but the humidity never leaves.

Brother if I had to make a choice between the 2evils. I would choose Austin. Houston has never appealed to me. It just always seemed "dirty ". I am not a expert on Houston, but at least with Austin it is a cleaner place to live. If I had the choice or way I would live in the country. Good luck

Yah I looked at your 5 acres. dont think i didn't think about it.

Fulshear is too flat. i have to stay in NW houston just so that there is some terrain. Mainly trees, but katy south is just flat and nothing.

I dont mind my commute, i get to listen to BS on the radio and it is decompression time.

But man, living out next to lake travis, or in dripping springs. that sounds right nice.

born and raise in the houston area my whole life and if i had a choice it would be the austin area.

the main thing i would miss about houston is the availability of the coast. other than that houston is not exactly what you would consider pretty.

the houston economy and the cost of living is way better than austin.
