If crossbows were not dangerous, why wouldn't any archery shop work on them???? There is NOBODY in this area that will put one on his bow press. They bring them to me because I have a crossbow press, and even I am afraid of them. When that thing is cocked, you really are not sure that it won't just go off. But of course, I don't work on them COCKED!!!!!
JoLea started shooting when she was 11 years old and was so tiny!!!! She started out at 18 LB, and is now pulling 28#. Yes, she may get better at more weight, but I think she is just so small that about 30# or 35# will be all she can handle. She LOVES hunting and is the envy of all her friends!!!
No, I did not mean to imply that the draw weight be brought down below 30#.
I think it would take at least that for enough kenetic energy to slay a deer.
But guys, you know what???? A hog is a LOT harder to kill than a deer!!!! Even a bear is easier to kill than a hog. I have killed all 3 species (and more) and the hog is the toughest!!!!
I hope this clears up some of my thoughts??

I think that may be the best point made on here yet. I have heard people arguing against a lower or nonexistant weight by making points such as.... So you just want to turn a kid loose with 15 pounds of draw... and things to that effect.

If we step back and think about it, we are talking about YOUR kids and wives, and neices, nephews ect... Would you turn loose a kid with a gun who wasnt ready? Of course you wouldnt, you would make sure they knew how to use it, were skilled with it, knew where to shoot the animal, took all required courses ect.
Why would YOU do things any diffrent with a bow? You really wouldnt would you? You would still make sure they were proficient with it before letting them shoot an animal right? So if YOU dont think the kid or who ever is ready, because they arent pulling enough draw weight or for any other reason then dont let them hunt that year.

And before anyone says "yeah but what about all the others who wont teach their kids properly" Are these the same people who dont theach their kids about guns properly? If the answer is yes, then there is nothing you can do about it. There will always be poor sportsmen no matter what laws are in effect.

Thanks for letting me rant. (even though most people are probably like me and dont read the long drawn out post fully, but just skim them insted )

        Super Post Sir

Not because you might agree but in fact its logic and common sense

        I think buff was kidding

He is a taskmaster I bet.

But if things go south on the kids bowhunt, old Dad or Granddaddy Buff will be hot on the trail teaching the fine point of tracking to Junior or Missy

        Thanks

Tink, I think Buff's saying that it doesn't hurt for the kids to graduate to bowhunting based on developed strength, maturity and skill.

Grab and go archery is detrimental to bowhunting, yet many, such as the crossbow and draw-loc crowd, advocate it.

my point is where do you draw the line that it doesn't exclude someone. I want to run the Boston marathon...... they should shorten it to around a 100 yards as thats about as far as I can run. the law has little to do with me or mine as I will still enforce what ever rules I chose on our hunting places.

              That was my second guess...

I have a Video of a 2000# Cape Buffalo Jumping the String

but I shot the sucker thru the heart anyway & Got complete penetration.

All ethical Bowhunters support and obey the law

But the NBEP teaches you to change laws that are outdated or fail to serve the public good.

Howie thread is about changing a old law A lot of stick bow shooters have heart burn since two States Hawaii & NC have three draw weight minims

                  40# for long bows
                  35# for recurves
                  30# for compounds

seem to me the die hards again the proposal are older males 50+ with no small children shooting traditional gear.

Traditional Shooters are not in the main stream of bowhunting any longer as Trad Shooters are about 10% of the bowhunting population.

Texas will fall in line with most states that have no minimums ( and no problems)

                  People talk about What if?

                  What if bears had Wings?

What if a kid went hunting with a 15#..stickbow? ( he would not even hit a deer).

Well like I tell the what if people who worry about things like bears having wings....

if bears had wings there would be some fine wing shooting aT some very large airborne targets!

                  Happy trails....

Then I am sure you can atest that it is nothing like shooting a whitetail deer. Sure they move around but, I am certain they are not capable of "jumping" a string completely like a whitetail can.

For all of those that are still arguing here, stop. Make some calls to people that are making the decisions and lobby. Nothing is getting done here.

I can tell you this. Tink. Your opposition to stickbows does not negate the fact that they have been proven effective time and again since Otzi and beyond.

No One here that I know of is against Stick bows, not me.
but less that 10% of bowhunter shoot TRAD archery, just a fact.
I have about 50 long bows and recurve that I love and still shoot

I shoot a old Black Widow made by the Wilson Bros SN# 188X
I am a member of TBoT

I have the World largest collection of original hand signed Howard Hill longbows

I even have an elephant Arrow used by Howard Hill and given by him to me
                        I have no opposition to long bows or Traditional Archery whatsoever;

Better get your facts straight and pull up your socks Sir.

I have seen plenty of little kids shoot great with crossbow and not able to shoot a compound to save their life.
                          Yeah Travis...that's what...nevermind...wrong thread.

Great pic, Marty! Sign me up for that 100-yard marathon in Boston...I have always wanted to run one.

altogether ban on draw weight may not be a good idea, but dropping to 30# for compounds sounds good to me.

With the tech. today a 25# draw is sufficient to take deer sized animals. Supposedly the Indians shot around 25# a took game and a few cowboys. The 40# draw weight prevents some people from legally taking game with Archery equip. I think it is a good thing to lower it or remove it.
