The Dog has to go!!!!

Im going to try to keep this short, so here goes. I have a 7 year old chow/dalmation mix. He was a great dog up until a few years ago when we started noticing he was slowly starting to get more hyper and aggressive. he was an inside dog and we noticed that when my second son was born he started getting really bad skin alergies and having seizures, and with that he was becoming more aggressive around my 2 year old (at the time) and even snapped at him a couple of times. One day my wife was letting him out and he bit her out of the blue, Hard. We released him to the local shelter, but could not go through with him having put down, so we brought him back home on an outside only rule to keep him away from the kids. He was fine, he calmed down again and we started letting him out of his yard to play when the kids(with adult supervision of course) were outside. We had no issues this past year. Until about a month ago, i noticed he was starting to have seizures again and was getting real aggressive again. well yesterday he bit my now 2 year old, got him pretty good. Unless there is some one who lives out in the country with no Kids that would like to take him (as is), i am scheduleing to have him put down. It is still a tough decision, only because he has been with us for so long, but i wasnt far from putting him down on my own yesterday when he bit the little one.

Basicly just venting, but my family is more important. Plus the pain in his eyes when he is seizing makes me think that i am doing him a favor also.

Sorry to bring more bad news but - you will carry the liability if he ever bites anyone anywhere. You got 2 warnings and chose to give him away.
At least get a hold harmless from anyone you give it to...

depending on the circumstance I may entertain the thought of finding them a new home...maybe.

Are you medicating him for his seizures? If not that might have something to do with it

we tried the seizure meds when it first came up a few years back, helped some but just lengthned the time between them. the aggresion was still there though.

Hold harmless? is that like a liability waiver of sorts, so if i did give him away they couldnt come back and sue me or something, if he were to bite someone?

Sorry your going through this. From reading your post I would recommend euthanizing him. At this point he is a risk to your families health. I would not ever recommend finding a new home w/ dog that will bite.

I once owned a male Dalmation that was registered, but was an adult when I got him. He was fun to have around at times, but my oh my, was he difficult to deal with. I tried everything I knew to deal with his behavior issues, but nothing worked. The original and previous owner had the same problem, which I found out later. He was never aggressive towards me or family members, but you would've thought he was a Pitbull when it came to fighting other dogs. One thing I really regret was not getting him neutered, because testicular cancer is what finally did him in.

My sister was given a registered female puppy as a gift by my father. That dog was fun to be around, just like mine, but she had terrible skin allergies and developed terrible seizures. My sister is a licensed Vet Tech and has around 20 yrs experience. She tried various meds, but the seizures just got worse. It was really sad to see her laying on her back helpless and expecting someone to fix her problem. We all really loved that dog. Later, we found out that all the other puppies from that same litter had been put to sleep by their owners, because every single dog developed serious issues later on.

I agree with putting the dog down. He may have some medical condition causing the aggression and seizures. And after they bite twice without being provoked I do.t care how long I have had the animal it is going down.

Even with a hold harmless they can still sue you. Had to put down a dog with the a similar problem.

I would say you did your best for him. Give him a peaceful death. If you gave him away, even with waivers and full disclosure, you would still have that nagging worry in the back of your mind. What if....

yeah dogs get aggressive towards me or my family. we take a walk. sorry it happened to you. one thing cuaght my eye. yall all said some dog with dalmation in it had problems. im betting its cuase they are so inbred and cross bred. lots of dalmations bite people for this reason. they can keep the looks of a dal but be mixed. wonder if thsatwould be a cause for the seizures and aggression. good ole family tree is a light pole. know what i mean ?
