The safest place during a entrapment is inside. It's best to wait on the elevator tech cause it can get dangerous and it turns in to a question of liability if someone gets hurt trying to do something they are not qualified to do. Most of the time it is something as simple as a contact failure but it's best to just sit down and relax. I have had many calls when someone tried to get out themselves or a person try to pry the doors and just made it more difficult for me because they broke something else.
I was on a Truck Company one time and we did ALOT of damage to the doors with the spreaders getting a person out .... The person was so glad to get out, when the Captain says to open them up we follow orders. Look at it as "job security"... sorry Brother
I aint skeered of a lot in life, but I have always had a fear of being trapped in an elevator. In fact I take the stairs unless I have a LONG way to go. Everytime I am in an elevator the first thing I do is watch how it opens and closes because you can bet your bottom dollar I am going to MacGyver the hell out of that thing if I get stuck.

I have had my building maintenance guys beg fire men "please put your ax away I can open it right now" I understand I would not want to be stuck in there either.
We had a couple of people stuck in one at work. Funny as heck when we are standing outside the elevator asking if anyone has to pee..........almost instantly, someone did. lol
